From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Starting Wednesday, the public will have an opportunity to pay respects to Pope Francis with a public viewing at the Vatican. The CBC's Chris Brown reports from Rome. The Pope's death from a stroke and heart failure Monday morning immediately set in motion a sequence of ancient rituals, including a gathering of Cardinals Tuesday morning. They announced his funeral will be Saturday, outdoors in St. Peter's Square. It will be an enormous event.

This is the Super Bowl for the Vatican. Journalist Claire Giangave at Religion News Service says the politicking over Francis' successor is already well underway. Among the visitors to St. Peter's Square Tuesday were members of Holy Spirit School in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland. Starting Wednesday, thousands of people are expected to say their own individual goodbyes to the Pope. His body will be moved from the papal residence to St. Peter's Basilica and for three days visitors will be able to file past his open casket. Chris Brown, CBC News, Rome. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev released his platform Tuesday. It promises to cut taxes, spending and the deficit.

But as JP Tasker reports, some critics say the math doesn't add up. This is a hopeful message and you know this really is the choice. Do you want hope for a change or do you want fear? With just six days left in the federal election campaign, conservative leader Pierre Poliev has released his platform, a roadmap for the next four years, including tax cuts and tens of billions of dollars in new spending for housing and the military. To shrink the size of government and keep it there, Poliev is pitching a new law that will put all tax increases to a referendum.

The conservative platform is booking revenue from expected economic growth. It's an unusual practice not followed by the other parties. They're not guaranteed. But they're estimates that are kind of based on some credible analysis. Economist Trevor Toome says Poliev is making some reasonable assumptions. Fast-tracking oil and gas projects and slashing red tape could deliver more money to Ottawa, he says. But Liberal leader Mark Carney isn't buying what Poliev is selling. Carney says Poliev's figures are irresponsible.

JP Tasker, CBC News, Vaughan, Ontario. Elections Canada says a record number of voters cast their ballots in the advance polls this past weekend. 7.3 million people voted in advance. That's an increase of 25% from the previous general election in 2021. At least 26 people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists in Kashmir. Dozens of others were injured in what officials are calling the deadliest attack in years. Most of the victims are believed to be Indian nationals. Rebecca Bundin reports from Mumbai.

What was meant to be a peaceful day out in the mountains turned deadly for a group of travellers visiting the popular Himalayan town of Pelgam in Kashmir. Locals and survivors described the horror of the situation after suspected militants opened fire. This man says he helped rescue three people after hearing gunshots. A militant group called Kashmir Resistance is claiming responsibility for the attack. It is one of the rebel factions fighting to unite Kashmir, either under Pakistani control or as an independent territory. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the perpetrators

will be brought to justice. The attack comes as US Vice President JD Vance is visiting India with some observers saying the timing of the attack is no coincidence. Rebecca Bundon for CBC News, Mumbai. A jury has been selected in the trial of five former NHL players accused of sexually assaulting a woman in London, Ontario after a 2018 gala for Canada's World Junior Hockey win. In Stanley Cup Hockey Playoffs tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs won Game 2 in the Battle of Ontario. The Leafs beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in overtime, Max Domey is the Leafs forward.
