Starting point is 00:00:00 So Canada, we've got to choose a new prime minister and it's a pretty crucial time. Even people who don't normally follow politics are trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I'm Catherine Cullen, host of The House, and I started a new weekly election show with two friends and fellow political nerds. Hello, I'm Daniel Thibault bringing you the Quebec Point de Vu. I'm Jason Microsoft and Calvary bringing the takes and stakes from the West. Together, we are House Party, a weekly elections podcast for everyone.
Starting point is 00:00:28 We tackle one big burning question every Wednesday. Find us in the House's feed wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, it's the world is our. I'm Joe Cummings. With less than a week to go before Election Day, the Federal Task Force monitoring foreign interference is reporting that there has been meddling over the course of the campaign. However, it says the meddling doesn't appear to have targeted any one specific party. Janice McGregor has more.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Well, nothing that, in the opinion of the officials threatens the integrity of the election overall. But it has detected ongoing attempts to spread Chinese Communist Party propaganda on social media. Most recently it's briefed the Conservative Party about one of their Toronto candidates, Joe Tay being targeted for his advocacy for democracy in Hong Kong. CSIS, however, does not interpret this disinformation campaign as proof that China favors a certain party to win the election. It's more about silencing those who speak out against Beijing. Here's representative Vanessa Lloyd. Keep in mind that it really is party agnostic, so it is to stifle the
Starting point is 00:01:43 criticism of the government. Officials have asked social media platforms to crack down on this, but they can't force them. Janice McGregor, CBC News, Ottawa. Meanwhile, the federal party leaders are fanning out today across the country. Liberal Mark Carney is in B.C. for campaign events that include a rally in Surrey. The NDP's Jagmeet Singh is also in Western Canada, campaigning first in Edmonton before participating in a virtual forum with the Assembly of First Nations. And conservative Pierre Poliev started his day in Hamilton, Ontario, but will appear
Starting point is 00:02:16 tonight at a rally in Trenton, Nova Scotia. The body of Pope Francis is now lying in state at St. Peter's Basilica. What was seen earlier today is the Pope's coffin was carried into the basilica, followed by a procession of cardinals and members of the Swiss Guard. Thousands of people will file past the casket over the next three days ahead of Saturday's funeral. As many as 23 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a shelter in Gaza City. Today's strike comes as mediators in the region work on a ceasefire proposal that would include, among other points, a five-year truce and the release of all remaining hostages.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Meanwhile, France, Germany, and Britain have issued a joint statement today that calls Israel's ongoing blockade in the territory intolerable. Talks on a peace agreement for the war in Ukraine are underway in London. However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has backed away at the last minute, fueling speculation that the U.S. may be considering Russian demands that Ukraine considers unacceptable. Crystal Gmaning has more. These negotiations must not result in appeasing the aggressor. Yuri Sak, advisor to Ukraine's Ministry of Strategic Industries, says Ukraine's negotiators
Starting point is 00:03:36 will be at the table. They want peace, but says Ukraine has clear red lines. It would be naive to actually expect Ukraine to somehow miraculously change our position now, for example, with regards to Crimea. There are reports that the U.S. is willing to bend to some of Russia's demands. They are reported to include recognizing Russia's annexation of Crimea, as well as at least four other Ukrainian zones invaded by Russia. In exchange, fighting would be halted.
Starting point is 00:04:09 European leaders have expressed concern Russian demands are being prioritized over Ukraine. Axios reports the White House's Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, will be there to present the U.S.'s final peace plan. Krystal Gamansing, CBC News, London. Now to Kashmir. We want justice! We want justice! We want justice!
Starting point is 00:04:30 We want justice! Demonstrators call for justice in the wake of yesterday's shooting at a popular tourist destination. Twenty-six people were killed after gunmen opened fire on a crowd of tourists. Indian police say they're searching for four male suspects, but no group has claimed responsibility at this point. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is calling the attack a heinous act of terrorism. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
