He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. Starting point is 00:00:34 From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Gina Louise Phillips. Pierre Polyev is promising to give police more power in dismantling tent encampments. The conservative leader was speaking today in Hamilton, Ontario. He says the Liberals abandoned vulnerable people to the streets. These homeless encampments are a symbol of everything this last liberal decade has brought us. Doubling housing costs, out of control food prices, which put people under economic strain, and of course rampant liberalization of drugs
Starting point is 00:01:05 and crime, which allow the chaos to expand. Poliev wants police to be able to arrest and charge people living in encampments. He also promises to grant judges the power to order people to mandatory drug treatment, even if they refuse. Opening arguments are underway at the sexual assault trial of five former World Junior Hockey players. They were charged last year in connection with an alleged assault that took place in London, Ontario in 2018. The complainant's identity is under a standard publication ban. This morning the judge gave the jury instructions. She counseled them not to make assumptions
Starting point is 00:01:42 about what constitutes sexual assault and what kind of person might commit that act. All five have pleaded not guilty to every charge. North American stock markets are gaining ground as the U.S. appears to be softening its rhetoric on trade. The Trump administration says there's an opportunity for a big deal between the U.S. and China. Nisha Patel reports. Investors are in a buying mood. US stock markets are 2 to 3 percent higher. Toronto's main index is up 1 percent.

Still the volatility may not be at an end while China has indicated its door is open to trade negotiations. The U.S. hasn't offered to make the first move to dial back tariffs. Nisha Patel, CBC News, Toronto. The Vatican says it will likely extend the hours of public viewing for Pope Francis. Thousands of people have been filing past the Pope's simple casket. It's placed in the central aisle of the Basilica.

The viewing will continue till Friday evening and the funeral will take place in St. Peter's Square on Saturday. Indian police are searching for four gunmen following yesterday's attack on a popular tourist destination in Kashmir. 26 people were killed in what the Indian government is calling an act of terrorism. Eyewitnesses claim the gunmen appeared out of nowhere as tourists entered a scenic valley in the town of Behalgamun. Survivors say only men were targeted. The Indian government says it won't bend to terror. And in a rare moment of solidarity, Malikar Junkarge, the head of India's main opposition party, delivered this message. This is a direct attack on the Indian state.

World leaders, including Donald Trump, have condemned the attack, which coincided with US Vice President JD Vance's India visit.
