Starting point is 00:00:33 From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. U.S. President Donald Trump is lashing out at Canada tonight. This time he's musing about raising auto tariffs and repeating his suggestion that Canada become the 51st American state. Katie Simpson reports from Washington. Hello everybody. U.S. President Donald Trump had largely toned down his attacks on Canada for much of the
Starting point is 00:01:00 Canadian election until now as he delivered a new tariff threat. I really don't want cars from Canada. So when I put tariffs on Canada, they're paying 25 percent, but that could go up in terms of cars. There is already a 25 percent tariff on all foreign-made autos, but Kuzma-compliant goods are exempt for now. There's also border security tariffs of 25 percent on all goods with a lower 10% on energy and potash. Again, Kuzma compliant goods are also exempt.
Starting point is 00:01:30 And there's the global 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. We don't really want Canada to make cars for us, to put it bluntly. We want to make our own cars. During an Oval Office event, Trump revisited some of his favourite complaints about Canada, including his exaggerated claims about the size of the trade deficit. Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington. On the election campaign trail, Conservative leader Pierre Polyev is promising to give police more power in dismantling tent encampments.
Starting point is 00:02:02 The CBC's Cameron McIntosh has more. We're going to restore safe streets for... Speaking in Hamilton, Conservative leader Pierre Poliev again pushing a tough on crime message. This time, homeless encampments. Letting these tent cities spread is not compassion, it is chaos.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Poliev is promising to amend the criminal code, giving police more powers to remove encampments and charge people blocking access to public space and for those found with illegal drugs, mandatory treatment. And we will allow judges to give them a sentence of drug treatment. The Canadian Mental Health Association says evidence supporting mandatory treatment is inconclusive. Poliev's latest promise comes after an endorsement by the Toronto Police Association. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:02:54 The cross-border linkages of the terrorist attack were brought out. India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is demanding that Pakistan denounce what he calls cross-border terrorism. He announced India suspending some ties with Pakistan following yesterday's attack. Twenty-six people were killed after four gunmen opened fire at a tourist spot in Kashmir. India is closing a key border crossing with Pakistan, suspending a water treaty and recalling diplomats. Pakistan denies involvement.
Starting point is 00:03:27 The upcoming professional women's hockey league season will feature a whole new team. The league announced today its seventh franchise in Vancouver. John Hernandez has reaction. We are so excited because right here in Vancouver, we got a team. After weeks of rumors, nine-year-old Sydney Millidan and her youth hockey teammates make it official. Vancouver will be home to the Professional Women's Hockey League's first expansion team. League executive Amy Shear said the city stood out
