Starting point is 00:00:00 1942, Europe. Soldiers find a boy surviving alone in the woods. They make him a member of Hitler's army. But what no one would know for decades, he was Jewish. Could a story so unbelievable be true? I'm Dan Goldberg. I'm from CBC's personally, Toy Soldier. Available now wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Juliane Hazelwood. There have been more than a thousand detected cases of measles in Ontario since the year began.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Public health officials say that's a thousand too many. They're concerned the highly preventable disease may once again become common in Canada. Jennifer Yoon has the details. Ontario has smashed a grim record. More than a thousand measles cases have been reported this year. Six children have been hospitalized. That's more people sick with measles than in over a quarter century. And that's not even the whole story. Alberta is also struggling with its own
Starting point is 00:01:11 measles outbreaks. 122 cases reported so far. The more measles there is, the harder it is to control. Dawn Bowdich, an immunologist at McMaster University, is aghast. Measles is vaccine preventable. That's how Canada eliminated the spread of the virus back in 1998. I'm really worried that we're entering a situation where we're going to lose our status where we can't say that measles is no longer endemic in Canada. There is no cure for measles. The best prevention is two doses of vaccination which provides nearly 100% protection.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Jennifer Yoon, CBC News, Toronto. Police have shot and killed a man outside Canada's busiest airport. Earlier this morning, Peel Regional Police responded to a distress call at Toronto Pearson Airport. They say three officers tried to resolve an argument involving several people in Terminal 1. Police Chief Nishan Duryapa says one man then pulled out a gun and officers responded with force. The subject was shot despite the best efforts of those officers
Starting point is 00:02:13 even to provide life-saving remedies to the individual as well as paramedics and EMS. I can advise you that a man in his 30s has been pronounced dead. Duryapa says there is no threat to public safety and nothing compromising airport operations. Airport officials say traffic is being rerouted as police continue their investigation. Liberal leader Mark Carney is under attack from other party leaders. They're questioning his trustworthiness after a report from Radio Canada. It says US President Donald Trump did talk about making Canada the 51st state in his March phone call with Carney. Alexander Silberman has more.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Yes or no, did Mr. Trump bring up the 51st state in his call with you? I said that he did. Liberal leader Mark Carney was challenged on his account of his March 28th call with US President Donald Trump. Initially, he said Canada's sovereignty was respected. Today, Carney said he stands behind those comments, but admits Trump talked about a 51st state. The essence of the discussion was exactly what I said.
Starting point is 00:03:19 It treated us with respect as a sovereign nation. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is questioning if Carney can be trusted. I'm worried that if Mark Carney's not being straight up with us, he's not going to be straight up with us in the negotiations. And Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet calls Carney's initial comments a stunt. And if that is not true, what else is not true? As Donald Trump continues to cast a shadow over the election. Alexander Silberman, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Halifax Police Chief Don McLean says officers arrested a teenage boy who threatened to bring weapons to school. Again, I'm not familiar with all the specific natures of how that unfolded, but I know our response was immediate and they took immediate action to mitigate the threat. Police say they seized a number of weapons from the teen's home and brought him into custody early this morning. The 16 year old faces multiple charges. Investigators don't believe anyone else was involved in the incident. Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian Airlines following Tuesday's deadly shooting in Kashmir. It also suspended peace accords with its nuclear-armed neighbour. Twenty-six people were killed after four gunmen opened fire at a popular tourist spot in the disputed region. Islamabad has denied any involvement.
Starting point is 00:04:34 New Delhi is calling the incident an act of cross-border terrorism, and police say two of the suspects were Pakistani citizens. India has closed its mainland border with Pakistan and paused a water sharing treaty. And that's your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
