I've been covering politics for 20 years and I can't
remember a time like now when everything we thought
we knew has been thrown in the air.
From Trudeau's resignation to Trump's tariffs to a
spring election during huge shifts in the polls.
There's a lot at stake and power and politics is
here to guide you through it.
I'm David Cochran and on CBC's only political
daily I speak to the key players in this election. From the candidates to the
analysts to the journalists on the campaign trail.
You can find power and politics wherever you get
your podcasts including YouTube.
From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
The judge presiding over the sexual assault case involving five former World Junior hockey
players has declared a mistrial.
That means the jury has been dismissed and a new jury is being chosen for a new trial.
The reasons for that decision are under a publication ban.
Mistrials are declared when a trial is perceived to be unfair.
Criminal lawyer Sam Pujala says it was not influenced by the case being
high profile.
It's not because it's Hockey Canada, it's not because of these accused individuals,
it really is an issue that presented itself that affected the fundamental fairness of
the trial. That was the view of the judge and that was an application that was made
and those are applications that frequently happen in the courts.
The five hockey players were charged last year in connection with an alleged assault
that took place in London, Ontario in 2018.
Liberal leader Mark Carney is campaigning in Vote Rich Ontario today.
He's hammering away at the argument that he's the best place to stand up to US President Donald Trump
and to lead the country through profound economic change.
Unlike Pierre Poliev, I've managed budgets before.
I've managed economies before.
I've managed crises before.
This is a time for experience, not experiments.
America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country.
And we will fight them.
Carney is stopping in cities in the manufacturing heartland of Canada,
pledging to protect Canadian workers and businesses from the Trump tariffs.
The Kremlin is blaming Ukraine for a car bombing that has killed a senior Russian general in Moscow.
It happened shortly before a U.S. envoy met with the Russian president to push for a ceasefire in his war on Ukraine.
Krystal Gmaning has the latest.
How are you Mr. President?
A smiling Vladimir Putin responded to Steve Witkoff in English saying,
good to see you.
It's the fourth visit to Moscow for US President Donald Trump's envoy.
America has been applying more pressure to reach a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Very fragile. applying more pressure to reach a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. Before boarding Marine One, President Trump said he hopes a deal gets done, insisting
talks are coming along.
Exactly what's on the table has not been made public.
President Trump did tell Time magazine that in any deal, Crimea will stay with Russia.
It was illegally annexed in 2014.
For the peace temporary, peace maybe can be solution.
Speaking to BBC, Kiev Mayor Vitaly Kalichko
said temporary land concessions are being talked about,
but added Ukrainians would likely never accept
their territory becoming Russian.

FBI Director Cash Patel
says agents have arrested a Wisconsin judge. Patel announced the arrest in a
social media post that he later deleted. He says the judge attempted to help a
man evade an immigration arrest last week. A law enforcement official confirms
Hannah Dugan was detained at a Milwaukee courthouse this morning. She's facing two
charges for obstruction and concealing the individual from arrest.
Thousands of people came out to see soccer superstar Lionel Messi play for Miami in Vancouver
last night. But as John S. Peary reports, it was the local team that stole the show.
Longtime Whitecaps fan Tony Gabriel says he was thrilled to finally see Lionel Messi play
live, but he was more excited about how the Whitecaps have been playing in recent
days.
The team is on top of the MLS standings and on Thursday defeated Messi's Inter Miami 2-0
in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-final.
Look at the turnaround, look at the team, look at the depth that they have.
How could you not be a fan of the Whitecaps?
The Whitecaps took the lead in the 25th minute when Brian White headed a ball from Pedro
Bitte past Miami goalkeeper Oscar Rustari.
Sebastian Berhalter added to the Whitecaps lead with a goal in the 84th minute.
Thursday's match came nearly a year after Messi failed to play in a game against the
Whitecaps at BC Place.
Last night there were many fans in the stands wearing Messi jerseys.
There were also many fans who booed him every time he touched the ball.
Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen said the team drew energy from the more than 53,000
fans in attendance.
The second leg of the semifinal will be played in Florida on April 30th.
