Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet is offering to work with the Liberals, putting aside partisan differences during trade negotiations. If Canada wants to be strong, it also needs us. Starting point is 00:01:57 The Prime Minister's office says U.S. President Donald Trump has congratulated Mark Carney on winning the election. The statement from the PMO says the leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together as independent sovereign nations, and they agreed to meet in person in the near future. And President Trump has just signed an executive order aimed at easing the impact of tariffs on the U S auto industry. The change means automakers will get some exemptions on other existing levies,
Starting point is 00:02:28 like those on steel and aluminum. The order also provides incentives for companies that base most of their production in the US. Trump says this gives time for automakers to pivot to domestic manufacturing. We just wanted to help them during this little transition, short term. If they can't get parts, we didn't want to penalize them. This latest tweak to the administration's trade policy comes amid fierce backlash from the auto industry. Companies insist the 25 percent tariffs would cause a slowdown in sales and significantly
Starting point is 00:03:02 raise car prices. The B.C. down in sales and significantly raise car prices. The BC government is promising to take action if the criminal investigation into last weekend's deadly car ramming falls short. A suspect is facing several counts of second-degree murder after 11 people were killed and dozens more injured at a Filipino festival in Vancouver. Officials say he had been under the care and supervision of a regional mental health team, but there was no indication he posed a threat to public safety. Chris Reyes brings us the latest. Starting point is 00:03:44 David Eby says he will call for public inquiry if the criminal investigation doesn't provide all the answers the government is looking for. The 30-year-old suspect in the Lapu Lapu festival killing, Kaiji Adam Lo, is in police custody. His next court appearance is on May 26. The Premier says he will also hold an independent commission to determine best practices for holding safe public events moving forward ahead of a busy season of festivals and cultural events. Vancouver resident Alejandro Sampar says his mother, father and sister were all killed Saturday night.
