1942, Europe. Soldiers find a boy surviving alone in the woods. They make him a member
of Hitler's army. But what no one would know for decades, he was Jewish.
Could a story so unbelievable be true?
I'm Dan Goldberg. I'm from CBC's personally toy soldier available now wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fay and we begin at the White House.
He's a very nice gentleman and he's going to come to the White House very shortly, within
the next week or less.
That's U.S. President Donald Trump talking about Prime Minister Mark Carney and the phone
call the two had yesterday.
Trump says Carney wants to negotiate a new agreement.
He called me up yesterday, he said, let's make a deal, you know.
He was running for office.
They were both, they both hated Trump and it was the one that hated Trump, I think, the least that won.
I actually think the conservative hated me much more than the so-called liberal.
He's a pretty liberal guy.
But no, I spoke to him yesterday.
He couldn't have been nicer.
Yesterday, the prime minister's office said the two discussed comprehensive negotiations
about a new economic and security relationship,
but did not mention Carney's imminent trip to Washington.
Ukrainian officials say they're hopeful a minerals deal with the U.S. will be signed
within the next 24 hours.
The long-anticipated agreement would provide the U.S. with access to Ukraine's rich mineral
deposits.
In exchange, Washington would contribute investments and potentially more military aid.
The agreement was expected to have been signed two months ago.
It was delayed after an argument between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky in the Oval
Office.
U.S. officials say they are ready to seal the deal but are assessing last-minute changes
made by Keith.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford went off on his
province's judges this morning at an announcement on reforming the bail system. Ford said too many
judges let violent repeat offenders back into communities just days after they're arrested
and accused of serious crimes. We need tough on crime judges. You know one of these judges that
are bleeding hearts, I can't wait till they retire. Matter of fact, I'll need tough on crime judges. You know one of these judges that are bleeding hearts?
I can't wait till they retire.
Matter of fact, I'll pay him to retire earlier.
I'll pay you out for two, three, four years.
Just get out of the system.
Ford also floated the idea of electing judges.
He's also calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to toughen federal legislation on bail.
Vancouver's mayor says an appropriate response to the deadly ramming attack last weekend is not a
public inquiry but rather a stronger mental health care system. The odds of
this individual getting the help they need would have been significantly
higher if we had those supports in place. Ken Sim is urging provincial and
federal governments to expand involuntary treatment for people with
severe mental health issues. The 30 year old suspect is charged with murder after
11 people were killed at a Filipino cultural festival. He had been under the
care of mental health teams and on leave from hospital. The mental health crisis is not just a health crisis.
It has become a public safety crisis.
Kim says the city has also started an internal review to safeguard future public
events.
The jury in London, Ontario is being shown text and video evidence from the
night of the alleged sexual assault involving former World Junior Hockey
players. The five accused men have pleaded not guilty.
Karen Pauls is at the courthouse.
Court was shown text in a group chat among the players shortly after Michael
McLeod and the complainant known as EM under a publication ban left Jack's bar
and were seen at the Delta Hotel.
One included a message from McLeod which says,
who wants to be in a three-way quick?'
and is signed 209 Mikey.
At 314, some of the players are seen arriving
at the hotel lobby.
In a video taken on McCloud's phone at 325 AM,
a male voice asks the woman,
"'You're okay with this though, right?'
EM responds, "'I'm okay.'"
In a second longer clip taken an hour later, EM is holding a towel to her naked chest.
She says, it was all consensual.
Are you recording me?
Okay, good.
A male voice asks, all consensual?
She answers, you are so paranoid.
Holy, I enjoyed it.
It was fine.
It was all consensual.
I am so sober.
That's why I can't do this right now.
An Uber receipt shows EM arrived home at 5.08 a.m.
