Starting point is 00:00:00 Mom, mom, did you see my race? Of course I did darling. Look, you did your best. You tried. The thing is it's not about winning, it's about taking part. Next year you might do better. But I did win, mom. You did? When it's sunny, make sure you can still see. At Specsavers, get two pairs of glasses from $149 and one can be prescription sunglasses. Hey, the sun won't wait.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Visit Specsavers.ca for details. Conditions apply. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. I spoke to him yesterday. He couldn't have been nicer. U.S. President Donald Trump says he congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney on his victory.
Starting point is 00:00:46 He says Carney will come to the White House within the next week for further economic talks. Carney is putting together his plan and his new team in Ottawa after winning this week's federal election. Tom Perry reports. Prime Minister Mark Carney and his team
Starting point is 00:01:02 meeting, talking and laying out priorities. Carney campaigned on a promise of protecting Canada's economy and sovereignty from the U.S., but he also pledged to break down internal trade barriers, boost homebuilding and work on a national energy corridor which could include new pipelines. Much of that will require legislation, including a federal budget. Carney will need the support of other parties to enact his government's agenda. Dominic LeBlanc, Carney's Minister of International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs, says he's encouraged by some of what he's heard. Mr. Poliev's message was that the Conservative Party will work to ensure that the Canadian economy and Canadian
Starting point is 00:01:45 workers are protected from the threat of tariffs. That's exactly what Mr. Carney has been saying. The Liberals will have other potential partners, the Bloc Québécois and what's left of the NDP. Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa. Well after losing his seat, Conservative leader Pierre Polyev is coming up with a plan for leading his party from outside parliament. Cameron Macintosh has more. I think he can. Re-elected Nova Scotia Conservative MP Christa Entremont says he thinks Conservative leader
Starting point is 00:02:15 Pierre Pauliev can hang on. I think we really have to sit down again as caucus and find out exactly what the next plan is. Sources say while there are internal criticisms of the campaign, Polyev is also being credited for picking up seats, particularly in Ontario. Andrew Lawton is a Conservative MP-elect in London, Ontario. But we also saw a significant increase in support in areas, demographic areas that have never gone Conservative.
Starting point is 00:02:42 But without a seat, Polyev can't serve as the official opposition leader in the House of Commons. To get back to Parliament, he'll have to get a Conservative MP to step down. But that can't happen until he or she has been in the position for 30 days. Then Poliev would have to win a by-election. The Prime Minister has up to six months after an MP resigns to call one. Parliament will resume just weeks from now. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:03:09 The United States and Ukraine have signed a landmark agreement on critical minerals. It will give the U.S. access to natural resources in exchange for American investments, Breyer Stewart reports. We know this was a contentious deal that they had been negotiating for months and I think there's a few key takeaways here. For one, in this deal the U.S. is not going to get control over any of Ukraine's minerals or natural resources. Ukraine is going to maintain full ownership.
Starting point is 00:03:37 They will both be contributing to the fund and the fund will receive money from new resource extraction projects. And so these are projects that Ukraine can decide on. Revenue generated from the fund will then be either invested in new projects or into reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. And certainly we know there is a big need there. The US can contribute military aid, it could give missile defense systems, but there's no specific requirements for it.
Starting point is 00:04:08 And I think that's the big question. Will military aid, US military aid keep flowing to Ukraine and will it flow at the same rate that it has been all this time? Briar Stewart, CBC News, London. And finally, we've got breaking sports news from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Washington Capitals have just eliminated the Montreal Canadiens in game five of their first round series final score for one. Meantime the Winnipeg Jets have just started playing the St. Louis Blues tonight in their
Starting point is 00:04:41 game five. The series is tied at two games each and right now the game is tied at one all. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neal Herland.
