Friday is an official day of mourning
Starting point is 00:00:37 across BC for the victims of last weekend's tragedy at Vancouver's Lapu Lapu Festival. 11 people were killed when a truck drove into a crowd. When the driver got out, bystanders held him down. Bus driver Dudley Green protected him from the angry crowd. My concern mostly was for the fact that if they had basically attempted to hurt this person or kill this person, those people involved now would also have to deal with the trauma of their actions. And I think that people are in a heightened state of anger and frustration and shock. They respond very negatively. And unfortunately, this situation brought out probably the worst in people.
Starting point is 00:01:16 The suspect is charged with eight counts of second degree murder. He'll appear in court Friday. Thirteen people are being treated in hospital. Police say security has been stepped up for this weekend's Vancouver Marathon, but add it's not because of the Lapu Lapu tragedy. In northern BC, officials are warning of warm, dry and windy conditions this weekend, prime conditions for wildfires. One north of Tumbler Ridge has disrupted telephone and internet service, while another near Fort
Starting point is 00:01:44 St. John has led to evacuations. Roads have been closed near both blazes, which are suspected to be human-caused. The U.S. National Security Advisor is being nominated for a new position, or he's being ousted, depending on who you ask. Mike Walz was at the center of a scandal now known as Signalgate. Paul Hunter has more from Washington. Mike Walz had been under fire since March after the revelation that he'd added a prominent journalist
Starting point is 00:02:10 to a private, high-level U.S. security group text chat on the texting app Signal, in which highly sensitive military intel was discussed just ahead of a U.S. assault on Houthi rebels in Yemen. Democrats on Walz's departure. It's long overdue. I mean, he's the guy who started the unclassified text chain. That's Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, as she and others emphasized, more must now follow. Chief among them, Trump's Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who is also on that text chain,
Starting point is 00:02:39 authoring its most sensitive aspects. But from Trump, the shuffle had just begun. Then announcing on his Truth social platform, Waltz is now his nominee to be US ambassador to the United Nations. And replacing Waltz as national security advisor, at least temporarily, wrote Trump Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while Rubio continues on at state. Paul Hunter, CBC News, Washington. Ukraine is working to ratify a minerals agreement with the United States, hoping it means American funds will soon start to flow. The deal is a major breakthrough for the two countries, but Ukraine remains locked in Russia's war with no clear way out and no solid security guarantees.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Breyer Stewart reports. U.S. President Donald Trump hasn't been able to quickly end the war as he vowed, but his team is describing this agreement as a win for Washington. We'll move it and operationalize it as fast as we possibly can. Stephen Miller is the White House Deputy Chief of Staff and says while peace is Trump's ultimate aim, this is also about payback. For the hundreds of billions of dollars that our taxpayers have spent subsidizing the war in Ukraine. Ukraine isn't required to directly repay the USAID but Washington sees this as an economic opportunity.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Under the deal the US will get preferential access to invest in new natural resource projects in Ukraine. Vladimir Zelensky said the deal was truly an equal partnership but on the streets of Kiev where there's significant distrust of the Trump administration some residents are wary. Breyer Stewart CBC News London. Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced an expansion to the federal dental care program. It's now taking applications from people aged 55 to 64. Carney says eligibility will be expanded in the coming weeks to those between 18
