Starting point is 00:00:00 In this acclaimed new production of Anna Karenina, the National Ballet of Canada asks, what is fair in love and society? Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil
Starting point is 00:00:38 his governance priorities later this morning while the federal NDP is trying to figure out its next steps after its worst election night ever. The New Democrats went into the campaign with 24 MPs and limped away from Monday's election with just seven and now they'll need a new leader after Jagmeet Singh announced heat step down. Marina von Stackelberg reports. Well there's a lot of work that needs to be done there's no question about it. Vancouver MP Jenny Kwan is one of just seven new Democrats returning to Ottawa, but she says she's been here before. In 2001, Kwan was a member of the BC legislature.
Starting point is 00:01:14 That's when the Liberals decimated the provincial NDP government. Kwan was one of only two new Democrats to keep their seats after the election. And we came back stronger. And so this is what we've got to do now with the federal NDP. But the new democrats will be weakened. With so few seats they've lost party status. It means they lose the guarantee to speak during question period and the chance to be part of committees to scrutinize new legislation. The NDP says it will move quickly to find an interim leader to replace Jagmeet Singh until a permanent one is chosen.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal dental care program is now taking applications from people aged 55 to 64. Kearney AIDS ads, rather, eligibility will be expanded again in the coming weeks to those between 18 and 54. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is insisting national security advisor Mike Walz wasn't fired.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Walz is being nominated as US Ambassador to the United Nations in March. Waltz included a journalist in a discussion of classified military information on the online app Signal. If the president wanted to fire him over the Signal thing, which by the way was a total nothing burger of a story, he would have just done it. But he actually decided it's better for Mike to be in this new role. He's given Mike the new role. That's it. Trump defended Waltz on social media, saying he's worked hard to put U.S. interests first. The ambassador ship has to be approved by the Senate, where Waltz is expected to face
Starting point is 00:02:54 intense questioning, especially from Democrats. Ontario's spring black bear hunt begins this week. It's a big driver of tourism dollars, but it's also controversial with bear advocates who say hunting bears during this particularly vulnerable time is unsustainable. Now new research shows bear populations have significantly declined leading to new questions about how Ontario is managing its bears and yet Singh reports. Black bear population numbers are really a social sort of decision. Scientist Joe Northrup studies bears for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. He says black bear populations in the provinces north near Sudbury and Thunder Bay have declined
Starting point is 00:03:36 significantly since 2010. We want to make sure that there's black bears around for all the different social values and cultural values and ecological values that they provide." But the data showing population declines is only part of the puzzle. Mark Rickman is a wildlife biologist with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. We need to decide how many bears we want in an area as a society to determine whether or not any of those declines are of a concern. The spring bear hunt brings in as much as $50 million for the tourism sector, but it's
Starting point is 00:04:08 divisive because it's when mother bears have young cubs and are vulnerable. The Ontario government said no changes are planned to the hunt this year. In Iyat Singh, CBC News, Toronto. Canada's auto industry will avoid new American tariffs set to kick in this weekend. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says auto parts that are compliant with Kuzma will be exempt from the 25% levies. That includes most of the parts Canada ships to the U.S. President Donald Trump has recently made concessions after the big three automakers warned the
Starting point is 00:04:39 tariffs will hurt the industry. That is your World This Hour. Remember, you can listen to us wherever you get your podcasts. We're updated every hour, seven days a week. For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles.
