Are Swifties the best music fans? Should kids be on social media? Is the customer
really always right? You know there are two sides to every debatable question
and we're here to make you laugh while you listen to Canada's top comedians
taking on these topics and many more. I'm Steve Patterson, host of The Debaters, and
I'm here to make sure our debates don't end in tears or bloodshed or hockey type fights with sweaters over each other's heads. No
guarantees though. Find and follow the debaters podcast and never miss an
episode.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Mike Miles. Prime Minister Mark Carney
will unveil his government's priorities later this morning while the federal NDP
is trying to figure out its next steps after its worst election result ever.
The New Democrats went into the campaign with 24 MPs and limped away Monday night with just
seven.
Now they'll need a new leader after Judd Meatsingh announced his intention to step down.
Marina Von Stackelberg reports.
Well, there's a lot of work that needs to be done.
There's no question about it.
Vancouver MP Jenny Kwan is one of just seven new Democrats returning to Ottawa.
But she says she's been here before.
In 2001, Kwan was a member of the B.C. legislature.
That's when the Liberals decimated the provincial NDP government.
Kwan was one of only two new Democrats to keep their seats after the election.
And we came back stronger.
And so this is what we've got to do now
with the federal NDP.
But the new Democrats will be weakened.
With so few seats, they've lost party status.
It means they lose the guarantee to speak
during question period
and the chance to be part of committees,
to scrutinize new legislation. The NDP says it will move quickly guarantee to speak during question period and the chance to be part of committees to
scrutinize new legislation.
The NDP says it will move quickly to find an interim leader to replace Jagmeet Singh
until a permanent one is chosen.
Marina von Stackelberg, CBC News, Ottawa.
A program championed by the NDP during its Supply and Confidence Agreement with the Liberals
is being expanded.
My Minister Mark Carney says the federal dental care program is now taking applications from
people aged 55 to 64.
Carney adds eligibility will be expanded again in the coming weeks to those between 18 and
54.
A group of aging Canadian veterans is the center of attention in the Netherlands.
They've arrived to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the country's liberation during the Second World War. The youngest
of them is 96, the oldest 105. They were among the thousands of Canadian troops who freed
the Dutch from the Nazi regime in 1945. The CBC's Chris Brown is in Appledorn this morning.
Their bodies are frail,
but the Canadian veterans who stepped off the bus
or were helped off in wheelchairs
brought big smiles and firm handshakes to Appledorn.
102-year-old George Brewster was a Spitfire pilot
who flew over 60 missions during the war.
Also part of the Canadian delegation here are sailors the war.
Also part of the Canadian delegation here are sailors whose ships participated in D-Day
and soldiers who served in Italy, France and the UK.
Jennifer McLeod is from Veterans Affairs.
They came from all over Canada.
It's a big journey for them but they are really excited to be here and all of them wanted
to be here and are anxious to come back to the Netherlands any chance they get. The push by Canada's army through
Holland's Rhineland in February and March 1945 was the last major ally
defensive of the war and also one of the most vicious. Chris Brown, CBC News in
Appledorn. US Vice President JD Vance is insisting National Security Advisor Mike
Walz wasn't fired.
Waltz is being nominated as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
In March, Waltz included a journalist in a discussion of classified military
information on the online app Signal.
If the president wanted to fire him over the Signal thing, which by the way was a
total nothing burger of a story, he would have just done it.
But he actually decided it's better for Mike to be in this new role. He's given Mike the new role. That's it.
Trump defended Waltz on social media saying he's worked hard to put US
interests first. The ambassadorship has to be approved by the Senate where Waltz
is expected to face intense questioning, especially from Democrats. Canada's auto
industry will avoid new American tariffs set to kick in this weekend. US customsS. Customs and Border Protection says auto parts that are compliant with KUSMA will be
exempt from the 25 percent levies.
That includes most of the parts Canada ships to the U.S.
President Donald Trump has recently made concessions after the big three automakers warned the
tariffs will hurt the industry.
Auto parts cross the border multiple times while a vehicle
is built.
That is your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles.
