He's one of the most wanted men in the world. This isn't really happening. Officers are finding large sums of money. It's a tale of murder, skullduggery and international intrigue. Prime Minister Mark Carney laid out his government's plans and priorities at his first news conference since winning the federal election. And he's promising to move quickly. His plans include a middle-class tax cut by July 1st and a face-to-face meeting with the US president on Tuesday. Olivia Stefanovich reports. I'm in politics to do big things not to be something. Starting point is 00:01:06 We will begin to set out that new path for Canada with a new cabinet to be sworn in on the week of the 12th of May. Carney says King Charles III will open the new session of parliament on May 27th, a rare gesture to support Canada's sovereignty. And Carney is preparing for the first in a series of high-stakes meetings with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday. My government will fight to get the best deal for Canada. But when it comes to governing, Carney says he will not strike a formal deal with the
Starting point is 00:01:36 NDP and pledge to call a by-election quickly so Conservative leader Pierre Polyev can try to regain a seat in the House of Commons. Olivia Stefanovic, CBC News, Ottawa. And a newly elected Conservative MP has announced his intention to resign his seat. Alberta MP Damian Curick says he'll step down so the Conservative leader Pierre Polyev can run in a by-election in his riding. Starting point is 00:02:16 the union representing Canadian auto workers. We have to stop the bleeding in this country or we're not going to have an auto industry. Unifor national president Lana Payne accuses the auto giant of bartering Canadian jobs to appease the U S president, Donald Trump. GM says it's cutting shifts in response to what it calls forecasted demand and the evolving trade environment. Payne is urging Ottawa to apply more pressure on automakers. The reality is you get to sell here.
Starting point is 00:02:44 You need to build here. And that message, I believe, has to be delivered by the Prime Minister to these automakers. They do not get to squeeze Canadian workers in this trade war. Next week, the Stellantis assembly plant in Windsor is shutting down. The company has not pointed to tariffs as a reason behind that closure. The jury at the sexual assault trial for five former World Junior Hockey players is hearing from their former teammates. The trial centers around one evening in 2018 in London, Ontario. Jamie Strashan is following the trial. Starting point is 00:03:25 of what happened in the early morning hours of June 19th. Taylor Radditch, now a forward with the Washington Capitals, testified remotely. He was able to recall very little on the stand but read portions of an interview he gave in 2018. In that interview he told a hockey Canada investigator about entering teammate Michael McCloud's room where the alleged sexual assault took place. He says he saw the complainant known as EM in bed, but didn't know if she was clothed or naked. Radish's room was next door to McCloud's where the players and EM were.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Radish describes being nervous and fearful when team members started getting calls from Hockey Canada, telling them an investigation was being launched. MacLeod, Dylan Dubay, Carter Hart, Cal Foote and Alex Formanton who've all had NHL careers have pleaded not guilty. Jamie Strash in CBC News, London, Ontario.
