In this acclaimed new production of Anna Karenina, the National Ballet of Canada asks,
what is fair in love and society?
Renowned choreographer Christian Spook adapts Tolstoy's epic novel to dance in a spectacular
work complete with lush costumes, cinematic projections, and a glorious curated score,
featuring the music of Rachmaninoff.
On stage June 13th to 21st, tickets on sale now at national.ballet.ca
sponsored by IG Private Wealth Management.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Dave Seglitz. The woman who's accused five former
world junior hockey players of sexual assault testified today at the players' trial in London, Ontario.
All five men, Michael McLeod, Dylan Dubay, Carter Hart, Cal Foot, and Alex Formonton,
have each pleaded not guilty.
The alleged victim, known in court as EM, detailed a night of heavy drinking back in
June 2018.
She testified she first met members of the gold medal-winning team at a bar and then
returned to a hotel room and had sex with one of them.
Court has heard that he then texted other teammates.
The Crown alleges what happened next was not consensual and is the focus of the criminal charges.
EM's testimony continues on Monday.
In BC, a provincial court judge has ordered a psychiatric assessment of the man accused in that deadly
SUV crash at a festival last weekend.
Chad Pawson has more from provincial court in Vancouver.
Kaiji Adam Lo appeared virtually from where he's being held.
He's wearing an orange-red jumpsuit, looking down with his hair disheveled.
The court appearance comes six days after 11 people were killed when they were run over at a Filipino-Canadian festival in Vancouver.
The accused, Lowe, facing eight counts of second-degree murder, was originally scheduled
for a court appearance at the end of the month.
That was changed because his lawyer, Mark Schwartz, asked the court for an assessment
of his client to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
That was granted.
It will be done from an in-custody facility
with mental health professionals.
All other details of evidence presented
at today's appearance are covered by a publication ban.
The judge on the case, Reginald Harris,
says the ban is needed to protect
the fairness of a future trial.
Lowe's next day in court is currently
scheduled to be May 30th.
Chad Pausen, CBC News, Vancouver.
British Columbia is marking an official day of mourning today for the victims of the Vancouver
tragedy.
Candlelight vigil and a memorial mass are being held this evening.
In Ottawa...
I go there with the expectation of constructive, difficult but constructive discussions.
That's the spirit.
Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Washington next Tuesday for his first
face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney says he'll face Trump on both recent tariffs but also
Canada's broader trade and security relationship with the United States.
You know we're meeting as heads of our government to discuss that partnership.
Now I'm not pretending those discussions will be easier. They won't proceed in a straight line. There will be zigs and zags, ups and
downs. But as I said in my remarks, I will fight for the best deal for Canada and only
accept the best deal for Canada and take as much time as necessary.
Carney says efforts to strengthen and expand Canada's economy will strengthen his hand
in negotiations. Meanwhile, Pierre Pollyaev will get another shot at a seat in parliament.
The conservative leader lost his Ottawa area riding in the Monday election.
Now an Alberta candidate who was re-elected is stepping down to allow Poliev to run a
game.
As David Thurton reports, the prime minister promises not to delay any by-election.
Thank you very much, and I look forward to your questions.
Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters he will not play politics if and when Conservative
leader Pierre Poliev runs in a by-election.
Last Monday, Poliev lost the Ottawa area riding he held for more than 20 years, leaving him
with no seat in the House of Commons.
I've already indicated to Mr. Poliev that if it's the decision of him
and the Conservative Party to trigger, if I can put it that way, a by-election, I
will ensure that it happens as soon as possible. No games, nothing, straight.
Now comes word that an Alberta seat will open up for Poliev. Conservative MP
Damien Couric won re-election in the riding of Battle River Crowfoot with
more than 80% of the vote.
But he now says he'll temporarily step down, allowing Paul Yev to run.
David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa.
And the Liberals have one more seat in Parliament.
Ontario's Milton East-Halton Hills South riding has flipped to the Liberals after an official vote recount.
Elections Canada has declared that the winner is Liberal candidate Christina Tessar-Dirksen, beating the Conservative candidate
Parm Gill, who received just 29 fewer votes.
And that is Your World This Hour. I'm Dave Seglunds.
