sovereignty is a top priority for Prime Minister Mark Carney. He says a meeting with US President Trump on Tuesday is among his first tasks. Ashley Burke has more on Carney's planned moves. Mark Carney campaigned on a promise to take on Donald Trump and win. Now the stage is set. We agreed to meet next Tuesday in Washington. The Prime Minister holding his first press conference since winning the election and speaking to Trump earlier this week. I think we're going to have a great relationship. He called me up yesterday and said let's make a deal. Carney is up against an unpredictable president who's ignited a global trade war and repeatedly

threatened to make Canada the 51st state. CBC News has learned to show strength, Carney asked King Charles before the election about the possibility of delivering Canada's throne speech. Now that's confirmed. The last time that happened was in 1977. Carney says up for negotiations, are tariffs and a new relationship with the US. Ashley Burke CBC News Ottawa. Prime Minister Carney also vows to fight for the auto sector as it grapples with a new round of cuts. General Motors is laying off more than 700 workers at its Oshawa plant.

As Anisha Patel reports, some in the industry worry it could get worse. Hundreds of Canadian auto workers will soon be out of jobs and General Motors is blaming American tariffs. The company is cutting production, pointing to slowing demand and the trade environment. Its Oshawa assembly plant will lose more than 700 jobs. Another 1,500 positions at parts suppliers could also be affected. Local union president Jeff Gray worries there may be more losses in the months ahead. These are our jobs, and to see them disappear

Pierre Poliev will get another shot at a seat in Parliament. An Alberta candidate who was re-elected is stepping down to allow Poliev to run again. As David Thurton reports, the new prime minister promises not to delay a by-election. Thank you very much and I look forward to your questions. Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters he will not play politics if and when conservative leader Pyr Poliev runs in a by-election. Last Monday, Poliev lost the Ottawa area riding he held for more than 20 years, leaving him with no seat in the House of Commons.

I've already indicated to Mr. Polyev that if it's the decision of him and the Conservative Party to trigger, if I can put it that way, a by-election, I will ensure that it happens as soon as possible. No games, nothing, straight. Now comes word that an Alberta seat will open up for Polyev. Conservative MP Damien Couric won re-election in the riding of Battle River Crowfoot with more than 80 percent of the vote. But he now says he'll temporarily step down, allowing Pauliev to run.

David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa. The Liberals have one more seat in Parliament. Ontario's Milton East-Halton Hill South Riding has flipped to the Liberals after vote recount. Elections Canada has validated final results in what was a tight race. The agency has declared that Liberal candidate Christina Tessar-Dirksen received 29 more votes than Conservative candidate Parm Gill. The recount adds one more seat to the Liberals total but still leaves the governing party shy of a majority.

In the NHL playoffs, the Winnipeg Jets have now been forced to play game seven following a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues tonight. Jets goalie Connor Hellebuck made 18 saves before being pulled after the second period. The Jets and Blues will meet in Winnipeg on Sunday. And that is your World This Hour.
