From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. John Hogan is going to be the next premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The lawyer and cabinet minister came out on top in the race to lead the Provincial Liberal Party.
William Ping has more details.
And in first place with 77.48% of the vote, John Hogan.
Newfoundland and Labrador has a new premier designate.
John Hogan was chosen to lead
the Provincial Liberal Party and the province.
47-year-old made a name for himself as a lawyer before becoming the province's attorney general
in 2021, and he's since worked as a minister in departments such as justice and health.
Hogan says he'll bring a fresh perspective to the province's issues.
And we're ready to fight for our economy, to deliver health care for access to all,
to provide support for
seniors and increase our focus on families and affordability.
Today's leadership convention came after Premier Andrew Furry's surprise resignation earlier
this year.
The provincial election has to take place before October.
William Ping, CBC News, St. John's. Washington's 25 percent tariff on foreign auto parts kicks into effect today.
It comes a day after General Motors announced it's cutting about 750 positions at its plant in Oshawa, Ontario.
Flavio Volpe is the president of Canada's Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association.
He says it's important to keep pushing the Trump administration to understand cuts to
American car companies in Canada hurts America.
We were able to successfully get the auto parts tariffs through under USMCA.
My hope is that we continue the fight with the same zeal to maybe save those drops before
they go away in the fall.
Volpe referred to the Canada-US-Mexico trade agreement as the USMCA. The US Border and Customs Agency says auto parts compliant with the trade deal
will not be subject to the new 25 percent tariff.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine,
firefighters put out smoldering buildings after a Russian drone attack.
Ukrainian officials say 46 people were injured.
Meanwhile, in Russia, a driver caught the moment when a Ukrainian drone struck a building
in a Russian port city on the Black Sea.
The mayor says at least five people were injured including two children.
The German government is pushing back against US criticism after it classified the AFD or
Alternative for Germany party as a right-wing extremist group. Dominic Follitis has more
details.
Dominic Follitis Germany's decision to classify the AFD as right-wing extremists drew sharp criticism from US officials,
including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who slammed the designation as tyranny in disguise on social media.
In a rare move, the German Foreign Office replied directly to Rubio, saying,
we have learned from our history that
right-wing extremism needs to be stopped.
The AfD is a right-wing extremist party.
Germany's domestic intelligence agency classified the AfD as extremist on Friday, saying it
threatens democracy, a move which will enable it to better monitor the party which came second in February's federal election.
The AFD's leadership criticized the decision, claiming it was politically motivated and a severe blow to German democracy.

The Hudson's Bay Company Archives has opened its doors in Winnipeg to allow people to see
historical artifacts from the last 350 years.
The collection includes maps, video and audio recordings and pieces of art.
The archive items have been donated to the Manitoba government and will not be auctioned
off as part of the bankruptcy.
