1942, Europe. Soldiers find a boy surviving alone in the woods. They make him a member
of Hitler's army. But what no one would know for decades, he was Jewish.
Could a story so unbelievable be true?
I'm Dan Goldberg. I'm from CBC's personally, Toy Soldier. Available now wherever you get
your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. We begin in Pictou County, Nova
Scotia where the search for two missing children continues. Six-year-old Lily Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack haven't been seen since
Friday morning. Searchers are combing a dense wooded area for any sign of them.
RCMP Staff Sergeant Josh Wise is the incident commander. He says a range of
technology was used overnight.
So I think we had seven or eight drones out at night using forward-looking infrared cameras
between the Alma Fire Department, RCMP Emergency Response Team and then So I think we had seven or eight drones out at night using forward-looking infrared cameras
between the Alma Fire Department, the RCMP Emergency Response Team, and then there was
heavy urban search and rescue dogs from Halifax Fire that were searching all night and then
multiple search teams doing grid searches on the ground.
He says people in the area can help with the search by checking sheds, culverts and ditches
on their properties. Police say there is no evidence the children were
abducted. Wildfire officials in Alberta say crews were carrying out a prescribed
burn on Hutton Creek in the Peace River Forest Friday afternoon when things went
wrong. Officials say an unexpected wind event allowed the fire to escape the
containment area. It's now listed as out of control. Alberta wildfires says suppression resources have been deployed and the fire isn't
posing a threat to any nearby communities. This year marks the 80th
anniversary of the Dutch Liberation when thousands of Canadian soldiers fought
and died to help free the Netherlands from Nazi control. A ceremony was held
earlier today. Surviving Canadian veterans were among those honoring the more than 1,300
Canadians who died. Chris Brown has more.
I'm at the Holton Canadian War Cemetery
where more than 1,400 Commonwealth soldiers, mostly Canadians, are buried.
Soldiers were killed in the final months of the Second World War in the battles
to liberate the Netherlands from Nazi Germany. This has been a weekend to
commemorate and remember on the 80th anniversary of the surrender of Nazi
forces here to Canada's First Army. A large delegation has come from Canada
including pipe bands, the Governor General, Indigenous leaders, but the guests
of honour are about 20 Canadian war vets, the youngest 96, the oldest 105.
5,000 people have gathered here at this remembrance service.
Nearby towns are draped in blue and red and white of the Dutch colours with also Canadian flags flying nearby.
The veterans here have shown incredible stamina given their advanced ages. Most move around in wheelchairs.
Chris Brown, CBC News, Holton.
Romania is taking another run at electing a new president. The last attempt six months ago was
annulled because of allegations of Russian interference. As Dominic Velaitis reports,
the outcome could influence what happens in Russia's war on Ukraine.
The polls in Romania are now open in the first round of this crucial election. 58-year-old
Necolai Surescu was among those casting their votes.
I hope the Romanian use their mind.
The elections being rerun after November's initial vote was annulled following allegations
of Russian interference in favor of the frontrunner Car Karline Georgescu. He was subsequently banned from standing again.
But also casting his vote today was Georgescu's heir apparent and the frontrunner in the opinion
polls George Simeon. The 38-year-old Euro-skeptic is an admirer of Donald Trump and the MAGA
movement and opposes military aid to Ukraine.
My only objective is to put Romanians first.
If no candidate emerges with 50% or more of today's vote, a runoff will be held later
this month, the final result of which will be watched closely in capitals around the
world.
Dominic Velaitis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia.
More than 400 workers at an IKEA store in Montreal are on strike.
They walked off the job just after midnight Saturday morning.
They're upset about the latest wage offer calling it insufficient and insulting.
A 5% bump over four years.
In a statement, the company says the store was able to stay open with about 60 managers.
But certain services such as the restaurant and deliveries have been shut down.
And that is your World This Hour.
For CBC News, I'm Julie-Ann Hazelwood.
