Starting point is 00:00:00 So, how did the Liberals manage to win government while the Conservatives also boosted their voter support with voters almost evenly split between the two? And what will this mean for hopes of some cooperation on Parliament Hill this spring? I'm Catherine Cullen and every Saturday on The House, we cut through the noise to make politics make sense. Follow us wherever you get your podcasts as we explore these questions and answer yours. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Stephanie Scandaris. Prime Minister Mark Carney says
Starting point is 00:00:35 his first face-to-face meeting with President Donald Trump was constructive. He described the wide ranging discussions as the quote, end of the beginning of resetting the relationship between the two nations. I conveyed to the president today what our countries have long proven to be true. That Canada and the United States are stronger when we work together. We can get a better deal for our workers. We can create more opportunities for our businesses. Carney says working through deals will involve complex negotiations but that deal for our workers. We can create more opportunities for our businesses. Carney says working through deals will involve complex negotiations, but that the prospects
Starting point is 00:01:10 are there. He will meet Trump again at the G7 Leaders Summit in Alberta in June. Carney added he will brief Canada's premiers at a First Ministers meeting on Wednesday. Conservative leader Pierre Pauliev is meeting with the party's caucus on Parliament Hill. He spoke to reporters for the first time since losing last week's election. Kate McKenna was there. We didn't come out on top and that's disappointing, but there is a lot to be thankful for. Conservative leader Pierre Poliev defended the campaign he ran and the gains his party made. But he promises change.
Starting point is 00:01:43 There's more to do. We have to enlarge our team, grow our support, build on our caucus strengths. He is meeting with his caucus on Parliament Hill. They're expected to discuss campaign results, air grievances, and choose someone to lead the party in the House of Commons since Poliev lost his seat. He's expected to field questions about whether his campaign director, Jenny Byrne, should continue in an advisory role after reports of infighting and organizational challenges during the campaign. Listen, we've got to, she did a lot of hard work and our team has a lot to be proud of. So far, Poliev's leadership appears safe, with many members of caucus saying publicly
Starting point is 00:02:19 they want him to stay in the job. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Ottawa. Premier Danielle Smith says she will honour some Albertans' wishes to pursue a referendum on provincial separation. A citizen-initiated referenda would be, by definition, initiated by citizens. And so I won't prejudge what issues citizens might want to put on the table. But I do not support separatism myself. I support a strong, sovereign Alberta within a united Canada, and that's what I'll keep working towards.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Yesterday, Smith announced she would call a referendum next year if citizens gather enough signatures. And her government has introduced legislation that, if passed, would lower the number of signatures needed to trigger a provincial referendum. Separation is still broadly unpopular, and Smith says she would prefer to negotiate a fair deal with Prime Minister Mark Carney's minority government. Starting point is 00:03:21 in June 2018. The five men have pleaded not guilty. Ali Chyassant reports. Justice! The day started again with a crowd outside of the London, Ontario courthouse supporting the complainant known as EM under a publication ban. On cross-examination, player Michael McCloud's
Starting point is 00:03:38 defense attorney, David Humphrey, questioned her level of comfortability with the hockey players at the bar that night in June 2018. Humphrey said, quote, I suggest you liked the attention from Mr. McCloud and his friends. EM testified, quote, it was confusing for me because I'm not used to that kind of attention at the bar. Humphrey also alleges that at the hotel after having sex with McCloud, that EM asked for the others to join. Humphrey said, quote, I suggest you said something like, get some of those guys back here. I want to have a wild night. E.M. responded, quote, that doesn't sound like something I would say. She has previously testified that she
