Starting point is 00:00:00 So, how did the Liberals manage to win government while the Conservatives also boosted their voter support with voters almost evenly split between the two? And what will this mean for hopes of some cooperation on Parliament Hill this spring? I'm Catherine Cullen and every Saturday on The House, we cut through the noise to make politics make sense. Follow us wherever you get your podcasts as we explore these questions and answer yours. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neal Herland. The Catholic Church will begin the
Starting point is 00:00:37 voting process to elect a new pope starting today. The conclave takes place behind closed doors in the Sistine Chapel. Father Patrick Mary Briscoe hosts the God's Blaming Podcast. He says the Conclave could go on for days. The Cardinals that I've spoken to and certainly members of the Vatican Press and many others here in Rome are sort of sensing that there's a bit of a fracture evolving, that there are conversations ongoing and that if there was a consensus it seems to have broken up in these last weeks. So there is talk about the conclave going on perhaps longer than expected, which could mean in my estimation four or five days. This morning the Cardinals will
Starting point is 00:01:16 take part in a holy mass. The first ballot will take place Wednesday evening. Starting Thursday, four votes will take place each day until a new pope is elected. We're following a developing story in Alberta. A mandatory evacuation order is in effect for parts of Athabasca County due to a wildfire, prompting the community and the nearby village of Boyle to each declare a state of local emergency. Meantime, wildfire alerts are in place for Westlock County and Parkland County. Residents should be ready to leave if the order comes. Canada remains in the top 10 global methane emitters, but a new report by the International
Starting point is 00:01:55 Energy Agency has some good news for Canada and some hope that this potent greenhouse gas can be tamed in the years to come. Anayat Singh has more. Strong action on methane could deliver a reduction of 0.1 degrees Celsius in the rise in global temperatures by 2050. Doesn't sound like much, but experts say that small shift would be significant. Tomar Broderiol is an analyst with the International Energy Agency. The group released a report on global methane emissions showing that methane emissions have
Starting point is 00:02:27 remained stubbornly high since 2019. Canada remains one of the top 10 worst emitters in the world, along with other major fossil fuel producers like the US, Russia and China. Around 70% of methane emissions from the energy sector can be reduced with technologies that have been deployed in it. Canada was singled out for embracing these technologies with its ambitious plan to cut methane emissions 75% by 2030. The federal government's figures suggest Canada's methane emissions are coming down,
Starting point is 00:02:57 but other major countries are falling behind. Inayat Singh, CBC News, Toronto. Last month, CBC News brought you the story of a family from El Salvador with two young daughters who were jailed in a U.S. port of entry twice after trying to enter Canada. But a federal court of Canada court challenge has now given them a chance to enter this country to make an asylum claim. Jorge Barrera has more.
Starting point is 00:03:22 This time, a Canadian will receive. Aracely Serrano says she feels hope this time Canada will let her in with her daughters Madeleine 14 and Itziana 4. In March, Aracely and her husband fled to Canada to escape the immigration crackdown in the U.S. Canadian border officials rejected documents Aracely said proved she had two brothers living in Canada key to making an asylum claim. Canada sent the family back twice to the US where they were held for two weeks in an Niagara Falls New York port of entry holding cell no windows no breath of fresh air. I think finally the government has recognized that they did the wrong thing. Aracely's lawyer Heather Newfield says Canada agreed to let the family in after she filed a court challenge.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Here we are. It seems like a lie, but yes. Thank you. We're here, says Aracely. Jorge Barrera, CBC News, Niagara Falls, Ontario. And finally, Edmonton hockey fans are cheering. Game one is over. Edmonton rallies from 2 two nothing down to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights by a count of four to two. In Stanley Cup playoff action last night, the Edmonton Oilers beat Las Vegas in game one of their second round series. Tonight the Florida Panthers face the Maple Leafs in Toronto and the Winnipeg Jets host
Starting point is 00:04:41 the St. Louis Blues. And that is your World Day's Hour. For CBC News, I'm Neal Herland.
