From the CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Julie Anne Hazelwood. BC premier David Eby
is giving details about today's call between the prime minister and provincial and territorial
ministers. It followed yesterday's visit by Mark Carney with US President Donald Trump.
The premier's concerns include softwood lumber, a long-running sore spot between Canada and
the US, and Trump's threat earlier this week to impose tariffs on movies made outside the
states.
It's obviously hugely worrying for the film sector, and it's hard to imagine the president
doubling the charges for Netflix for Americans and hoping that that's a winning political
strategy or cutting the number of films and TV shows that they
watch by half or more. But regardless of that, the industry needs to know that the federal
government's onside.
Eby says he's been trying to deliver his message to Trump via the president's favorite media
outlet, Fox News. Carney will meet with Canada's premieres next month in person. The Council
of the Federation will gather in Saskatoon on June 2nd.
Yukon's Premier is stepping down. Ranj Pillay says he's also resigning as the territory's
Liberal leader. He says after two decades in politics, he's not prepared to endure
another election campaign.
The work of a Premier or Minister is all-consuming, which means a considerable time away from those that are closest to you.
And I didn't understand that at the time, but I get it now.
Pillay plans to stay on until a new leader is selected. He's been Premier since 2023.
Yukon's next election is set for November. A day of cross-examination at a sexual assault
trial in London, Ontario.
Lawyers for the five former Canadian World Junior Hockey players are questioning the
complainant about the fateful night and her relationships.
Alicia Assange has the latest.
No more silence, no more fear.
Justice for survivors here.
Carter Hart was the first of the five accused hockey players to walk into the courthouse,
again walking by a group of EM supporters with signs saying that they stand with the
complainant, who is facing cross-examination for the third day in a row, this time from
former Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart's attorney Megan Savard.
She was drilling down on inconsistencies in the statements EM initially gave police and
the statement she gave to Hockey Canada in 2022, questioning the credibility of her testimony. Savard also asked her about
her boyfriend at the time. EM says she considered the initial sexual encounter with McCloud
as cheating, but she insists what allegedly happened in the hotel room later with the
other men wasn't consensual. Ali Chyasson, CBC News, London, Ontario.
Crews on two sides of the country are battling wildfires. In Newfoundland and Labrador, several
are burning, including one along Conception Bay North. Police are evacuating parts of
the region. In Alberta, hundreds of people have been forced from the village of Boyle,
about 150 kilometers north of Edmonton. Heat and high winds are fueling the flames, and
officials expect those dry conditions to last until the weekend.
RCMP say they're limiting the search for two missing children in northeastern Nova Scotia after six days.
The active search efforts to locate Lily and Jack will be scaled back and when transitioning from an active search to a scaled back
search the probability of survival is taken into consideration.
I want to assure you that our missing persons investigation continues.
We're not packing up and we're not giving up.
And it won't end until we know where Lily and Jack are and can bring them home.
Staff Sergeant Curtis McKinnon says searchers have covered more than four square kilometers,
but McKinnon says they're circling back to places they've already searched to make sure
no clues were missed.
Six-year-old Lily Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack were last seen Friday.
They're believed to have wandered away from their house in Pictou County.
The U.S. Federal Reserve is keeping its benchmark interest rate unchanged a third time in a
row.
This comes amid heightened economic uncertainty brought on by President Donald Trump's global
tariffs.
In a statement, the Fed acknowledged that the labor market was still solid, but said that risks of higher unemployment and higher inflation have risen.
The decision will keep interest rates at 4.3% after a series of cuts at the end of last
year.
