From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neal Herland. Black smoke emerged from the Sistine
Chapel chimney today. It signals that no pope has been elected in the first
vote by cardinals at the conclave.
One hundred and thirty-three cardinals are electing the next leader of the Catholic Church.
The CBC's Juanita Taylor was in Vatican City when the smoke started rising.
Well black smoke billowed out at about 9 p.mpm local time at the Vatican and people had been
waiting all day for this moment.
People were saying that they were feeling curious and intrigued.
I've never waited two hours to look at some smoke, but that was worth it.
I just think it's really lovely.
I love the sense of community the Church kind of brings together and I can really appreciate
that even as someone who's not Catholic. One Vatican observer said that this conclave could prove unpredictable,
especially with 133 voting cardinals. Juanita Taylor, CBC News, Vatican.
The Mounties are scaling back the search for two missing children in Nova Scotia,
after six days of looking for six-year-old Lily Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack, Nicolas Egan has the latest from investigators.
Down a rainy dirt road in Nova Scotia's rural Pictou County, RCMP announced they're scaling
back the ground search and rescue operation for the two young children, missing since
Friday.
Curtis McKinnon is a staff sergeant with the RCMP.
He says officers will
be searching areas that have already been covered to make sure no clues were missed.
And when transitioning from an active search to a scaled back search, the probability of
survival is taken into consideration.
Searchers have meticulously combed four square kilometres around the children's home in Lansdowne
Station, about 20 kilometres from the nearest town. RCMP initially said they believe the children just wandered off, but are now saying it's
being treated as suspicious and the major crimes unit has been involved since Saturday.
Investigators say they haven't seen a trace of the kids in the woods except a lone boot
print days ago.
Nicholas Sagan, CBC News, Lansdowne Station, Nova Scotia. Cross-examination continues at a sexual assault trial in London, Ontario. Lawyers for the
five former Canadian World Junior Hockey players are questioning the complainant about the
fateful night. Ali Chiaissant reports.
No more silence, no more fear. Justice for survivors here.
Carter Hart was the first of the five accused hockey players to walk into the courthouse,
again walking by a group of EM supporters with signs saying that they stand with the
complainant who is facing cross-examination for the third day in a row, this time from
former Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart's attorney Megan Savard. She was drilling down
on inconsistencies in the statements EM initially gave police and the statement she gave to Hockey Canada in
2022, questioning the credibility of her testimony. Savard also asked her about
her boyfriend at the time. EM says she considered the initial sexual encounter
with McLeod as cheating, but she insists what allegedly happened in the hotel
room later with the other men wasn't consensual. Ali Chyasson, CBC News, London, Ontario.
The Premier of Yukon is resigning.
Renge Pillay says he's also quitting as the territory's liberal leader.
He says after two decades in politics,
he's not prepared to endure another election campaign.
The work of a Premier or Minister is all-consuming,
which means considerable time away from those that are closest to you.
And I didn't understand that at the time, but I get it now.
Palay says he plans to stay until a new leader is chosen. He's been Premier since 2023.
Yukon's next election is set for November. Crews on two sides of the country are battling
wildfires. In Newfoundland and Labrador, several are burning, including one along Conception Bay North.
Police are evacuating parts of the region.
In Alberta, hundreds of people have been forced from the village of Boyle, about 150 kilometres
north of Edmonton.
In Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs have just won Game 2 of their second
round series against the Florida Panthers.
Final score 4-3, Toronto leads the series to nothing.
