Starting point is 00:00:00 Have you ever wished you could grab a coffee with your favorite author? I may not be able to provide you with a latte, but you can join in on some coffee vibes conversations on my new show, Bookends. On Bookends, I sit down for honest conversations with some of today's literary stars, like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose latest book changed our perspective on motherhood and the nature of love. You can check out those conversations and more on Bookends with Matea Roach, wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Herland.
Starting point is 00:00:43 The second vote to elect a new pope will take place this morning at the Vatican. Yesterday, 133 cardinals failed to reach the two-thirds majority to pick the next leader of the Catholic Church. Tourists, journalists, and pilgrims from around the world are gathering at the Vatican to watch and wait for the white smoke to rise. Father Christian Lindenbach is a priest from Regina who's now studying in Rome. It's a unique opportunity to be close to the heart of the Church. The Pope is the central figure in the Catholic faith, and to be in Rome, the eternal city, for the events that
Starting point is 00:01:20 happen, it's something that not only is fruitful for me spiritually, but also just from a cultural and a world perspective has been something very unique. The new pope will succeed Francis, who died last month at the age of 88. Measles continues to spread across the country. Alberta is reporting nearly 300 cases so far this year. While Ontario, still the epicenter, is reporting more than 1300 cases, Jennifer Youn reports on a British mom's nightmare after her daughter got infected as an infant.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Our family's been through hell. A parent's nightmare. Helplessly watching your child dying in a hospital bed because of a measles infection. Rebecca Archer says she didn't realize just how serious the virus can be. Ten-year-old Renee was infected as an infant, too little to be vaccinated, during an outbreak in Manchester, UK back in 2013. She seemed to recover, but the measles virus stayed dormant in her brain for years.
Starting point is 00:02:22 When it finally attacked her nervous system, she had seizures. Couldn't talk, eat, even stay conscious. Yeah, they told me that it was gonna be fatal. Renee had a rare complication of measles called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Rebecca is begging parents to get vaccinated. She says her child would still be alive
Starting point is 00:02:44 if others were immunized against measles. That injection could save your child's life. Jennifer Yoon, CBC News, Toronto. Well it's a surprise political announcement in the Yukon. Premier Ranch Pelé is resigning after just two years. He was born in Nova Scotia and rose to the highest level of politics in northern Canada. Chris Windier reports. It is truly an honor, the greatest honor of my life. But my time in this role has come to an end.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Ranch Pelé ends his time as premier the same way it began, without facing voters. Pelé was acclaimed as leader of the Yukon Liberals in 2023. He leaves ahead of a fixed election date set for November. Palay says he's simply not prepared to endure another election campaign. You can succeed in an election, but then you also have to have everything you need to continue to do all that work. The liberals finished the last election tied with the center-right Yukon party with eight seats apiece.
Starting point is 00:03:41 That means Palay relied on support from the NDP to stay in power. And with at least two other cabinet ministers saying they won't run again, either another term for the liberals is far from guaranteed. NDP leader Kate White. I think this resignation really shows that this election is a two-party race. It's going to be between the Yukon NDP and the Yukon party. Chris Windier, CBC News, Whitehorse. Pakistani officials say they shot down 12 Indian drones today as tensions rise between the two countries. Yesterday India fired missiles against targets in Pakistan. Local officials say 31 civilians died, including some children. India accuses Pakistan of backing the militants who carried out an attack on mostly Hindu tourists from
Starting point is 00:04:25 India last month that killed 26 people. The Winnipeg Jets lost their opening game of round two in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Scramble! Connor can't get the shot away and Dallas will win game one three two here in Winnipeg. Meantime the Toronto Maple Leafs won their second game against the Florida Panthers last night, final score 4-3. Tonight the Edmonton Oilers play the Vegas Golden Knights in game two of their second round series. And that is your World This Hour.
Starting point is 00:04:57 I'm Neil Herland.
