Starting point is 00:00:00 So lately, I've been really blown away by how locked in Canadians are to political news. I'm Jamie Poisson, host of the daily news podcast Frontburner. And while the election's over, that does not mean that people are done with politics. Quite the opposite, really. So if you're curious about how our country will navigate this divided and crucial moment in our history, listen to Frontburner. We've got you covered on that and a wide range of other top-of-mind stories as well. Follow Frontburner wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:00:32 From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Claude Fague. Pakistan has denied claims by India its missiles and drones have destroyed three military stations in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan's defense minister said if his country had attacked, everyone would know it. The Indian foreign minister warned that any escalation would be met with firm responses. Tammy Bruce is a spokesperson at the State Department. Secretary Rubio spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister Jai Shankar.
Starting point is 00:01:08 In both calls, the Secretary emphasized the need for immediate de-escalation and called for an end to the violence. He expressed U.S. support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged continued efforts to improve communications. India has issued directives to increase security levels at all ports, terminals and shipyards. Pakistan is asking international partners for loans citing heavy losses. After four days of grueling questioning, cross-examination continues this morning of EM, the woman who alleges she was sexually assaulted by five World Junior hockey players
Starting point is 00:01:46 in June of 2018. As Katie Nicholson reports, long cross examinations can present a challenge for the witness and the lawyers asking the questions. The crowd of supporters for EM has grown with each day of her cross-examination. Inside, so has the intense scrutiny on her previous accounts of what she says happened in a London hotel in June of 2018. Five former World Junior Hockey players are accused of sexually assaulting her. They have all pleaded not guilty, and they all have legal teams cross-examining her one after the other. Well it's entirely possible for a witness to be worn down. Christopher Sharon is a law professor at Western University. He says in cases with
Starting point is 00:02:33 multiple lawyers there's a chance the cross can become repetitive, go on for too long or go too far. I've seen it happen where people start to feel sorry for the witness. All optics the remaining three defense teams have to consider as cross-examination rolls into its fifth day. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, London, Ontario. Trade wars and tariffs are taking a toll on the oil patch. Since the start of the year, the benchmark price for a barrel of oil has gone from around $80 a barrel down to $60.
Starting point is 00:03:05 And that's partly because of concerns about a recession tanking the world's demand for energy. As CBC's Paula DeHatchick reports, companies all over North America are watching prices, but the reaction is slightly different in Canada versus the U.S. You know, it's a bit of a wait and see. Brian Schmidt, CEO of Calgary's Tamarack Valley Energy, staying calm as oil prices plunge. There's no use putting adding production when prices are this low.
Starting point is 00:03:32 The benchmark price of a barrel of oil has fallen about $20 U.S. since January. South of the border, companies aren't just holding oil production steady. Some are actually starting to scale back. But American companies tend to need a higher price for oil just to break even, unlike in Canada where it's a different story. Randy Ollenberger is an analyst with BMO Capital Markets. He says Canadian companies are still profitable now and he expects production to remain the same even if prices keep falling. So the position of the Canadian companies here is actually on a comparative basis much better.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Analysts say Canada can also benefit from the weaker dollar to send more product into the U.S. market even with a trade war. Paula Duhaczek, CBC News, Calgary. The Edmonton Oilers have taken a 2-0 series lead against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Five Durfin Oilers scored including Leon Dreisaitl who converted a pass from captain Connor McDavid at 1520 of the first overtime leading the Oilers to a 5-4 victory over Vegas last night. The series now shifts to Edmonton for the next two games. Tonight both Toronto and Winnipeg resume their series. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fague.
