Uh, excuse me, why are you walking so close behind me?
Well, you're a tall guy. You throw a decent shadow when I'm walking in it to keep out of this bright sun.
It hurts my eyes.
Okay, well you know at Specsavers, you can get two pairs of glasses from $149 and, oh you'll like this,
one can be a pair of prescription sunglasses.
Sounds great! Where's the nearest store?
Not far, come on. Let's hurry then! To my count! One, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, one-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1 jobs last month, mostly in manufacturing, wholesale and retail, as U.S. tariffs work
their way through the Canadian economy.
Anis Haydari reports.
Statistics Canada confirms it was harder to find work this April compared to last April.
189,000 more unemployed people year over year.
Overall unemployment is at 6.9 percent.
That's an increase too.
We've been waiting all year for signs of a direct hit.
These April numbers were that first real sign.
Brendan Bernard pins this soft job market on tariffs and the trade war.
He's senior economist at the job website indeed.
Wholesale and retail trade and the natural resource sector.
These are the areas of the economy most exposed.
One step forward, two steps back in terms of the Trump administration of the tariff
rollout that's creating a lot of uncertainty.
Gio Jacinto is an economic and trade policy analyst with the United Steelworkers in Toronto.
He says the hope is federal responses might mitigate the economic impact of tariffs as
time goes on.
Meaningful employment across Canada may depend on decisions made in Washington.

Alberta's Provincial Emergency Service is warning the public of an evacuation order
for wildfires.
The province posted online within the past hour that an evacuation order remains in
place for parts of Sturgeon County, a municipal district in Edmonton,
due to the ongoing wildfires. The post says the affected area stretches from Township Road 580
South to the North Saskatchewan River. Over 70 homes have been evacuated so far. The size of
the fire is more than 3,000 hectares. Residents in the surrounding area are being told to prepare
for a possible evacuation.
And a warning today for those wanting to make donations to people impacted by the wildfires.
Sturgeon County Fire Chief Chad Moore says scammers might try to profit from that generosity.
Really do your due diligence when it comes to online donations or fundraisers.
We do know of some bad actors that may try to take advantage
of the unfortunate situation out here.
And it's important to differentiate those
from folks truly seeking help.
Catholics around the world today got a look
at their new spiritual leader at work in the Pope's first mass since being elected.
Margaret Evans has more.
Leo XIV delivered his first mass as Pope in the Sistine Chapel.
He delivered part of the homily in his native tongue, a reminder that he is the first American Pontiff. We celebrate this morning. Robert Francis Prevost was born in Chicago,
but he spent much of his pastoral life in Peru,
where he's also a citizen.
I think it worked in his favor
that he had experience outside of America.
He had a broader view of the world.
Vatican reporter Juno Orocho Esteve
says the choice of an American still surprised him.
Under the belief that they would never vote for an American Cardinal that's
always been the standard. Cardinal Thomas Collins, former Archbishop of Toronto,
says it simply wasn't a factor. We are thinking of a highly spiritual man, a
holy man. What he is, whether he's born doesn't enter into it. Pope Leo the 14th's
formal investiture will take place on May 18th with a ceremonial mass here
at St. Peter's Basilica.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Florida Panthers have nudged a little closer to the Toronto
Maple Leafs inmesis Brad Mourchan scored
at 15-27 of the first overtime giving the defending cup champion Panthers a 5-4 win,
cutting the Leafs series lead to 2-1.
The two teams will play again Sunday night.
And that is your World This Hour.
