From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. The impact of Donald Trump's tariffs
has started rippling through Canada's economy. The evidence, new job numbers released today.
It shows a sharp drop off in employment
in trade-sensitive sectors that caused the jobless rate
to take up to 6.9%.
Peter Armstrong reports.
Canadian employers added 7,400 jobs last month,
but there are a whole series of caveats
that go along with that report.
Public sector jobs were up nearly 23,000, while private sector employment fell 26,000.
And many of those public sector jobs were one-time gigs working through the federal
election.
The job losses were concentrated in manufacturing and regions dependent on manufacturing.
Economists like Brendan Bernard from the job search site Indeed say it doesn't take much
to figure out why those jobs are being lost.
Well we've been waiting all year for signs of a direct hit from the trade war on the economy
in general and the job market specifically and I think these April numbers were that first real
sign. Bernard says other trade sensitive sectors showed substantial declines as well and
the concern is that though the tariffs began in April the uncertainty has only grown since then.
Peter Rundstrom, CBC News, Toronto. Prime Minister Mark Carney's post-election cabinet is set to be
sworn in next Tuesday. As Kate McKenna reports, its makeup could tell us a lot about how Carney
plans to govern. Next Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce which members of his team will take
on key roles in his administration.
There are 169 Liberal members of the House of Commons who could be tapped for cabinet
positions.
He has said he'd maintain gender parity.
He's also said his cabinet will be efficient and focused.
Regional representation is also expected to be a consideration.
Unlike in the previous government, there are now liberal MPs elected in every province.
Carney campaigned on being best suited to handle the US administration and this
week he took three cabinet ministers to the White House with him signaling early
confidence in Dominique LeBlanc, Melanie Jolie and David McGinty staying in
cabinet. But we can expect some new faces too as Carney seeks to
differentiate himself from his predecessor. Kate McKen expect some new faces too, as Carney seeks to differentiate
himself from his predecessor. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Ottawa.
To India.
Sounds of explosions were ringing above the skies in Karachi early Saturday. Pakistan
said it launched a military operation against India, targeting multiple bases, including
a missile
storage site in northern India.
The offensive came shortly after it said India had fired missiles at three air bases earlier
on Saturday, including one close to the capital of Islamabad.
Most of the missiles were intercepted.
The conflict ignited last month when New Delhi blamed Pakistan for an attack on a popular
tourist site in Kashmir that left 26 civilians dead.
Officials in Sturgeon County, Alberta have provided an update on an out-of-control wildfire
burning near the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area.
Seventy-one homes have been evacuated and nearby residents, including those in the town
of Redwater, have been told
to be ready to leave if necessary.
The size of the fire is now more than 3,000 hectares.
Alberta Wildlife Incident Commander Gavin Hoika says that they've been coping with windy
conditions and a lack of precipitation, but otherwise the weather has improved.
Higher humidity and lower temperatures have helped lower the intensity of the fire and allow firefighters to make progress. Minimal
rain fell on the fire in the last 24 hours and significantly more is needed
to lower the fire danger in the area. Firefighters are working on containing
the fire's perimeter to limit its spread with the support of heavy equipment,
helicopters and air tankers if needed. Huyke says about 150 firefighters are battling the fire.
PWHL playoffs Friday night the defending Walter Cup champion
Minnesota Frost have evened their semi-final series with the Toronto
Scepters. Minnesota scored three times in the
second period, two more in the third to beat the Scepters 5-3 in Toronto
tying their best of five series at one game apiece.
And that is your World This Hour.
