From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. To India.
Sounds of explosions were ringing above the skies in Karachi early Saturday.
Pakistan said it launched a military operation against India targeting multiple bases, including
a missile storage site in northern India.
The Indian military says Pakistan also targeted medical and educational facilities in Kashmir.
The offensive came shortly after it said India had fired missiles
at three bases earlier on Saturday, including one close to the capital of
Islamabad. Most of those missiles were intercepted. So hundreds of millions of
people are on edge in India and Pakistan as tensions between the two nuclear armed
neighbors flare further. Pakistan is claiming India fired ballistic missiles that landed in Indian territory.
It's the latest in a sudden escalation of both sides.
Philip Leishanek has the latest.
Small alarms fire over Indian-administered Kashmir as the Indian military says they targeted
Pakistani drones.
India is calling it Operation Sindor, a retaliation for
a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that left 26 people dead. India's Foreign
Secretary Vikram Mistry says they targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
We are only responding to the original escalation as I said and our response has been targeted
precise. In turn Pakistan claims to have shot down Indian fighter jets and drones.
Neelish Bose, a history professor at the University of Victoria,
says it's hard to wade through the misinformation and disinformation.
There are just a range of claims and counterclaims,
and so it's very difficult to get a sense of what actually is the case.
What is clear is there are attacks from both sides of the border with dozens of civilians
killed and injured and hundreds of people evacuated from border communities.
Philliply Shannock, CBC News, Toronto.
Officials in Sturgeon County, that's a suburb of Edmonton, have provided an update on an
out of control wildfire burning near the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area. 71 homes have been evacuated and nearby residents, including those in the town of Redwater, have
been told to be ready to leave if necessary.
The out of control fire has grown to more than 3,000 hectares.
Alberta Wildlife Incident Commander Gavin Hoicup says they've been coping with windy conditions
and a lack of precipitation, but otherwise the weather has improved.
Higher humidity and lower temperatures have helped lower the intensity of the fire
and allow firefighters to make progress. Minimal rain fell on the fire in the
last 24 hours and significantly more is needed to lower the fire danger in the area.
Firefighters are working on containing the fire's perimeter to limit its spread
with the support of heavy equipment, helicopters and air tankers if needed.
Hoica says about 150 firefighters are battling the blaze.
To the Stanley Cup Finals.
Put the cross for Flurry. Down to Ehlers. Ehlers scores!
Ehlers back down!
Two nothing, one up ahead! As seen on CBC and Roger Sportsnet, the Winnipeg Jets got two goals in an assist from Nick
Ehlers, a personal playoff best, to help beat the Dallas Stars 4-0 in Winnipeg, tying their
Western Conference Playoff Series at a game of peace.
Connor Hellebuck made 21 saves for the shutout.
The series moves to Dallas now for game three on Sunday in Sunrise, Florida.
Halifax native and Leafs nemesis Brad Marshand scored at 1527 of the first overtime,
lifting the defending cup champion Panthers to a fire four win,
cutting the Leafs series lead to 2-1. Game four is set for Sunday night back in Florida.
PWHL playoffs, the defending Walter Cup champion Minnesota Frost, even their series with the
Toronto Scepters scoring three goals in the second, two more in the third to win the game 5-3,
tying their best of five series at one game apiece.
And that is your World This Hour.
