From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. China and the US say they've made strides in their tariff talks in Geneva. They're trying to defuse a trade dispute that's threatening the global economy. Neither side is giving details, but they are giving plenty of hints.

It's important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought. That being said, there was a lot of groundwork that went into these two days. China's vice premier is promising more economic stability and certainty.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Full details are expected to be released tomorrow. India says attacks this week on Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and Pakistan killed more than 100 militants. A ceasefire that started yesterday remains in place, with each side accusing the other of violating the truce. India's head of military operations, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai. It took only a couple of hours for the Pakistan army to violate these arrangements by cross-border and across the line of control firing, followed by drone intrusions across the expanse of the Western Front. These violations were responded to robustly and dealt with as they must be. Pakistan confirms it sent armed drones to hover over several major Indian cities,
Starting point is 00:01:54 including New Delhi, adding it hit more than two dozen military targets. Top military officials from both sides are expected to talk tomorrow. Just ahead of a visit by US President Donald Trump to the Middle East this week, Iran and the United States held a fourth round of negotiations today over Tehran's nuclear program. They happened in Oman. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson describes the discussions as difficult but useful. There's a festive air in St. Peter's Square. Thousands of people packed in for Pope Leo's first Sunday address. Megan Williams is at the Vatican.

The new Pope, originally from Chicago, called on Catholics to support young people in joining the priesthood and religious life, a long-time crisis in the church, with fewer and fewer Westerners making that choice. He also turned to global conflict, calling for an end to all war. Never again war!
Starting point is 00:03:00 And urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all Israeli hostages and a peace deal for Ukraine. Pope Leo welcomed the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan and ended with a plea for what he called the miracle of peace. Megan Williams, CBC News, The Vatican. Don Davies told Rosemary Barton Live, the party has a strong case. I think we need to work together to build a strong economy in an independent Canada with good jobs and good wages in the face of unprecedented challenges from south of the border. So I think ensuring that we have the resources so that we can bring the voices of Canadians to Parliament and successfully advocate for those policies is in everybody's interest. Parliament is set to resume later this month with King Charles delivering the throne speech on May 27th.
