Starting point is 00:00:20 why the internet sucks now, whose fault it is, and my plan to fix it. Find who broke the internet on whatever terrible app you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. We begin in rural Nova Scotia, where five people are dead after a crash on Highway 101, about 60 kilometers north of Halifax. RCMP say two vehicles heading eastbound collided. Staff Sergeant Major Deepak Prasad talks about what happened to the people inside. The driver and passenger from the Honda Civic were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and one passenger from the Nissan Sentra were both pronounced
Starting point is 00:01:03 deceased at the scene. A 50-year-old male passenger was transported to hospital and was later pronounced deceased. A 29-year-old male passenger from British Columbia remains in critical condition. Investigators are asking witnesses to provide dashcam video they may have of the late Saturday crash. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he still hopes a ceasefire with Russia will happen starting tomorrow. Zelensky says he's waiting for Russia's response to the U.S.-backed truce and that he'll also personally be waiting for Vladimir Putin in Turkey for peace talks.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Ukraine, along with European allies, had called on Russia to accept a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting Monday. But Russia's leader called for direct negotiations instead in Istanbul on Thursday. Donald Trump posted on social media that Ukraine should agree to Putin's peace talks proposal immediately. Hamas says it will release Israeli-American hostage Eden Alexander as part of an effort to reach a ceasefire deal and resume aid deliveries to Gaza. Hamas officials say they expect the release to happen in the next 48 hours. Alexander is the last living American hostage in Gaza.
Starting point is 00:02:17 The White House describes the release as a positive step forward in ceasefire negotiations, and is calling for the remains of four other Americans to be released as well. In Jerusalem, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sarr issued a warning today accusing Hamas of misusing aid. GIDEON SARR, Israeli Foreign Minister It used it to feed its war machine. It used it to retain its strong position at the expense of the civilian population. If the aid continues to go to Hamas and not to the people of Gaza, the war will continue
Starting point is 00:02:53 forever. He went on to say he supports the U.S. aid plan for Gaza, which would involve Israeli soldiers establishing secure distribution sites inside the territory from which groups, including non-profits, would distribute food and aid. The idea has faced sharp criticism from UNICEF, saying the plan would increase suffering for children and families. Israel has blocked aid from entering Gaza since early March. China and the U.S. say they've made strides in their tariff talks in Geneva.
Starting point is 00:03:23 They're trying to defuse a trade dispute that's threatening the global economy. The other side is giving details, but they are giving plenty of hints. U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer. It's important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought. That being said, there was a lot of groundwork that went into these two days. China's vice premier is promising more economic stability and certainty. Full details are expected to be released tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Prime Minister Mark Carney and his cabinet will be sworn in this week. It's happening under the shadow of the tariff dispute with the U.S. This morning on Rosemary Barton Live, international trade minister Dominic LeBlanc talked about the goal for the ongoing talks. Our overwhelming priority is to, as quickly as we can, get to a circumstance where the tariffs that have applied to Canada are lifted. And obviously then our retaliatory tariffs would also be lifted, but they remain in place while this circumstance persists. LeBlanc also asked what was asked what role he
Starting point is 00:04:25 would play in the new cabinet and he would only say he hopes to be of service. In the Stanley Cup playoffs the Winnipeg Jets are looking to expand a lead in their series with the Dallas Stars. The game is underway right now. They're tied at one game apiece. While tonight the Toronto Maple Leafs face the Florida Panthers in game four of their playoff series, the Leafs have a 2-1 game lead. Coverage on CBC begins at 7.30 Eastern.
