Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil his new cabinet on Tuesday, and speculation is already flying over who could make the cut. Over the weekend, the Liberal Party moved closer to a majority in parliament after a recount in Quebec delivered one more seat, for a total of 170. 172 seats are needed for a majority. Sharon Yonan-Reynold has reaction. Tarkhban Liberal MP-elect Tatiana August says she's ready to get to work.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Because every single vote matters and I feel like well cannot be any surer than today, than for me. The win by just one vote in a riding that has flip-flopped since election night. At first it was called a liberal victory. Then, it switched to the Bloc Québécois during election Canada's validation process before the judicial recount. It's a writing that's historically voted for the Bloc Québécois, but it followed a province-wide trend. Recounts are triggered automatically when a candidate wins a writing by less than 0.1 percent of the overall vote. The process leaves no room for appeal.
Starting point is 00:01:48 The parties can issue complaints if they identify problems with the broader election process. So far, neither the Bloc Québécois or its Terebonne candidate have said they intend to do so. Sharon Yonan-Reynolds, CBC News, Terebonne. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is hoping for a full and temporary ceasefire with Russia starting today. He also says he would be in Turkey to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin personally. Russia is proposing a fresh round of peace talks this Thursday. Starting point is 00:02:25 This is a very important development. To say that it's a breakthrough and that the war will end, that's premature. But certainly we are at a point now, the closest we've been to a potential negotiated settlement since March of 2022, when the last talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul. This was one month into the war and then things broke off. So we have not had any direct dialogue between the Russians and the Ukrainians since then. It's been three years since the current war broke out when Russia invaded Ukraine. It's been a tragic weekend in Nova Scotia. Five people are dead after a crash in the Annapolis Valley. Two vehicles were headed in the same direction when they collided on
Starting point is 00:03:11 a twin section of Highway 101. The Mounties say a 29-year-old male passenger from B.C. was airlifted to hospital. He's in critical condition. A new report says hiring staff such as nurses from private agencies has cost Ontario hospitals billions of dollars over the last 10 years but some hospitals are searching for ways to cut their reliance on outside staffing and keep nurses in the public system. Alison Northcott reports. So I'm just going to check your blood pressure okay? At the Markham Stovill Hospital, staff have been working hard to reduce the reliance on private agencies
Starting point is 00:03:50 that provide temporary hires like nurses to help fill shifts. Through the work we've done over the last few months, we've been able to reduce our agency nursing by two-thirds. Mark Pham, President and CEO of Oak Valley Health, says the use of agencies grew when the COVID-19 pandemic began as demand increased and nurses left the profession or retired. The challenge in working with agency nursing is primarily that there's a much higher cost. A new report commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found Ontario hospitals have paid for-profit agencies more than $9 billion over the past decade. Andrew Longhurst, a health policy researcher at Simon Fraser University and the report's author, says real per capita spending on agencies nearly
Starting point is 00:04:32 doubled between 2013 and 2023, while for in-house staff it increased by only 6%. Alison Northcott, CBC News, Montreal.
