From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Herland. Prime Minister Mark Carney will reveal
his cabinet Tuesday and it will be smaller than the recent Trudeau
cabinets. Tonight we are learning some of the names who will be joining Carney's inner circle.
Ashley Burke reports.
Mark Carney will be back at Rideau Hall for swearing-in ceremony. His office says more
than half of the faces will be new to his cabinet. Sources tell Radio Canada Joelle
Lightbound and Natalie Proveau are expected to join the ministerial team. Sources tell Radio Canada Joelle Lightbound and Natalie Provo are expected to join the
ministerial team.
Sources say Carney is expected to drop a lot of people that were in his first cabinet like
Jonathan Wilkinson as he tries to remake the Liberals' image and focus on the economy.
But sources say some familiar faces like Christia Freeland and Stephen Guibert will stay.
The Prime Minister's office says Carney is expected to keep his cabinet under 30 people plus add a second tier, up to 10 more junior
ministers known as secretaries of state. Ashley Burke, CBC News, Ottawa.
And tonight, senior liberal sources tell the host of CBC's Power and Politics, David Cochran,
that John Fraser will become Canada's Justice Minister,
Tim Hodgson will become Minister for Natural Resources and Energy,
former Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson will join Cabinet as Minister of Housing.
Other names in Cabinet will include Eleanor Olshusky from Edmonton,
Rebecca Alty from Yellowknife, and Wayne Long from St. John, New Brunswick.
Every province and the North as a region, but not each territory, will be represented
with either a Secretary of State or a full Cabinet Minister.
An Alberta separatist group says it will push the Premier to hold a referendum on independence
from Canada this year.
Alberta Prosperity Project has released the question it hopes to put on the ballot.
Josh McLean has more.
This is as serious as a heart attack.
Jeffrey Rath with the Alberta Prosperity Project unveiling the question his group hopes to put to Albertans later this year.
Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province of Canada?
This is what Albertans expect. They want a clear, concise question
leading to a clear, unequivocal answer. Rath argues Alberta would fare better economically,
free of Ottawa's oversight. But his group has more hurdles to clear before the question will
appear on a ballot, including getting it approved. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wouldn't weigh in
when asked about the question. There are several groups out there that are proposing different timelines, different questions,
and so I'll wait to see which one garners enough signatures.
Smith says she wants to see Alberta have more sovereignty while staying a part of Canada.
Josh McLean, CBC News, Calgary.
The last American hostage in Gaza is now back with his family.
Edan Alexander was released by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Monday.
Israel says the handover was made possible by U.S. political pressure.
Chris Brown reports.
As developments in this war go, the release of hostage and U.S. citizen Edan Alexander
was a modest one. I'm missing him!
Don't leave me!
Though for his loved ones gathered in Tel Aviv, including his mother,
and hundreds of others in the city's hostages square, it was a euphoric moment.
Top US negotiator Steve Witkoff flew to the border with Gaza to witness Alexander's moment
of freedom, but this was a deal that appeared to cut out Israel.
The US mediated through Egypt and Qatar,
leaving some Israeli hostage families incensed at their government.
Yehuda Cohen's son Nimrod has been in captivity for more than a year and a half.
Netanyahu is working on stalling and prolonging the war
on the blood of Israeli civilians and Israeli soldiers.
Hamas has said it will only release the remaining 20 or so hostages if Israel permanently ends
its attacks, which it won't agree to.
Chris Brown, CBC News, in Riyadh.
In Stanley Cup playoffs tonight, the Edmonton Oilers are hosting the Vegas Golden Knights
in game four of their second-round series.
Right now, Edmonton is ahead 3-0 in the third period.
