Starting point is 00:00:00 Do you ever finish a true crime series and wish that you could know more? It happens to me all the time. And that's what's driving my interviews on Crime Story. Each week I'm lucky enough to sit down with the best storytellers and really dig into what it takes to tell those stories. And this month our riches run deep. We have Keith Morrison, Amanda Knox, and Bone Valley's Gilbert King. I'm Kathleen Goldtar. Find Crime Story wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Prime Minister Mark Carney has signed an order delivering a promised tax cut for the middle class.
Starting point is 00:00:45 It'll take effect on Canada Day. By July 1st, as promised, that middle class tax cut that will reduce taxes for the 22 million Canadians who pay federal income taxes, that that tax cut will take into effect. It's my pleasure on behalf of the cabinet to sign this order to deliver that tax bracket. The order reduces the tax rate on the lowest tax bracket by one percentage point. Carney signed the order during the first meeting of his newly sworn in cabinet. He says the cuts are part of his government's plan to grow the economy. The new Liberal government will not table a budget when Parliament returns in the coming
Starting point is 00:01:25 weeks. Instead, Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says the government will put forward an economic statement sometime in the fall. The Manitoba and Ontario governments have signed a deal to boost trade aimed at counteracting the threat of US tariffs. Premier Wab Kinew and Ontario leader Doug Ford announced a memorandum of understanding. Kinew notes while the government is the agreement is about the economy, it's also about trust. When we look ahead to the future and we talk about building up this country's economy, I want Canadians to know that
Starting point is 00:01:58 this is really about trust. When a Manitoban looks on TV and they see Premier Ford fighting the good fight on our behalf, it's because there's trust between our jurisdictions. The agreement uses existing and new legislation to improve the flow of workers and goods, including direct-to-consumer alcohol sales. Ontario has also signed similar agreements with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Other provinces have also been striking similar agreements. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said his goal is to remove all inter-provincial trade barriers by Canada Day. Firefighters are focusing on two large wildfires in eastern Manitoba as
Starting point is 00:02:34 several fires rage across the province. Out-of-control fires in Lactobani and near Nopumming Provincial Park have forced hundreds to evacuate. Kristin Hayward with the Manitoba Wildfire Services conditions are expected to remain difficult. We are looking at obviously very challenging conditions so we have hot, hot weather right now. We have dry conditions. We have had some very windy days and we expect that to continue today as well as into tomorrow. Hayward says some precipitation is expected but
Starting point is 00:03:05 it won't be enough to douse the flames. The province is also working with the Ontario government to monitor a fire along the shared border. Several dozen kilometers to the east a Northern Ontario First Nation is also issuing an evacuation notice to its members. At least two wildfires are burning close to the Wabaseming First Nation causing significant smoke and fire risk. The band council says it has secured spaces in Knora and other locations for the evacuees. The US president has signed more than a trillion dollars worth of trade deals with Qatar. It includes a record sale of aircraft from Boeing. The new agreements come on the heels of Donald Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia
Starting point is 00:03:50 yesterday, which included a $140 billion arms deal. Aaron Collins has the latest from Washington. We always had a very special relationship. Donald Trump in his element, his four-day tour of the Middle East stopping in Doha Wednesday. The president announcing a deal for Qatar Airlines to buy $200 million worth of jets from Boeing. It's the largest order of jets in the history of Boeing. That's pretty good. The president has also been offered a $400 million luxury jet to replace Air Force One,
Starting point is 00:04:19 but the gift from Qatar has been criticized for the risk it could pose to national security. Tom Tillis is a Republican senator from South Carolina. To know that Air Force One is not like every other Boeing, and it's going to have to be put through a lot of paces and probably every square inch analyzed. The president is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates Thursday. Trump has also hinted he may attend peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey. Aaron Collins, CBC News, Washington.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
