How did the internet go from this?
You could actually find what you were looking for right away,
bound to this.
I feel like I'm in hell.
Spoiler alert, it was not an accident.
I'm Cory Doctorow, host of Who Broke the Internet
from CBC's Understood.
In this four-part series, I'm going to tell you
why the internet sucks now, whose fault it is,
and my plan to fix it. Find Who Broke
the Internet on whatever terrible app you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Herland. Canada's new housing minister says the
solution to the country's real estate crisis is to build more homes, not lower prices.
Former Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says the Canadian government created a huge shortage
once it stopped building affordable homes after the 90s.
As Rafi Boujikanein reports, he's also defending his record as Mayor, which coincided with
soaring housing costs in B.C.
We need to build a lot more across Canada.
Housing Minister Gregor Robertson fresh into the job with a strong opinion on what should
happen.
We need to deliver more supply.
We need to be delivering more affordable housing.
Robertson was the mayor of Vancouver from 2008 to 2018.
During that time, data from the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation shows the average
price of single-family and semi-detached homes rose 179% across the Metro Vancouver area.
That's already put him in the crosshairs of opposition leader Pierre Polievre. But Robertson
is defending his record.
I wasn't getting the help I needed from the federal government when I was mayor or the
provincial government, of all stripes.
Robertson will be spearheading a new government agency in charge of building affordable homes,
a campaign promise from Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Carney has also pledged to remove the GST on the purchase of a home at or under $1 million
for first-time buyers.
Rafi Bujikani on CBC News, Ottawa.
On Thursday, the Ontario government will table its first budget since Premier Doug Ford won
an overwhelming re-election in February. The budget comes in the middle of a simmering
trade war between the United States and Canada's largest province. Jamie Strashan has more.
Let's not rely on President Trump any longer. Let's start a career.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford says reducing reliance on American trade and becoming more self-reliant
will be priorities.
There's been a flurry of pre-budget spending already.
Billions of dollars to speed up housing growth, retrain workers and reduce tolls.
Also a plan to defer billions in taxes.
Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalsey.
All of this will come at a cost.
Ontario's relatively small $1.5 billion deficit could swell and shelve plans to balance
the books by next year, says the province's former chief economist Brian Lewis.
We are seeing slower economic growth, so that's going to affect government revenue projections.
Beyond Trump, Lewis says health care is a priority.
Things like addressing hospital wait times, also much needed money for the province's
universities and colleges. Jamie Strash in CBC News, Toronto.
Ukraine and Russia are supposed to begin ceasefire talks in Turkey Thursday, but Russian President Vladimir Putin won't be at the table. The
Ukrainian president had invited him. U.S. President Donald Trump tells Fox News he
would like to speak to Pope Leo, the first American leader of the Catholic
Church. Trump made the comment during an interview with Sean Hannity. We have our
first American Pope. He does seem to disagree with you on immigration.
Putting that aside, would you like to talk to him about that?
Sure, I mean I would. He was really a surprise choice.
Leo posted on his ex-account before he was elected pope,
criticizing Donald Trump's migration policy and an article
questioning Vice President JD Vance's theological beliefs. The Edmonton
Oilers are headed to the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Tonight
Edmonton beat the Vegas Golden Knights 1-0 in overtime to win their
second-round series in five games. Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner basking in the
glory of another shutout.
Really happy that I was able to come in and give my team a chance to win and obviously
being able to do it in five is huge. Edmonton will play either Dallas or Winnipeg in the
Western Conference semifinals. Earlier tonight the Florida Panthers clobbered the Toronto Maple Leafs.
clobbered the Toronto Maple Leafs. It goes into the box.
It's a thorough 6-1 victory for the Panthers here in game five.
Florida now leads that series 3-2.
And that's the CBC News.
