Starting point is 00:00:00 Other People's Problems was the first podcast to take you inside real-life therapy sessions. I'm Dr. Hilary McBride, and again, we're doing something new. The ketamine really broke down a lot of my barriers. This work has this sort of immediate transformational effect. Therapy Using Psychedelics is the new frontier in mental health. Come along for the trip. Other People's Problems Season 5, available now. From CBC News, it's the world this hour.
Starting point is 00:00:38 I'm Joe Cummings. First to breaking news today out of London, Ontario, where the judge in the World Junior Hockey Sexual Assault case has dismissed the jury. It means the trial proceedings will now resume before the judge alone. Five former Team Canada players are accused of sexually assaulting a woman known only as EM in June of 2018. All the former players have pleaded not guilty. Talks were held today in Turkey between Ukrainian and Russian officials.
Starting point is 00:01:10 The discussion was brief and came to an end with no agreement in sight on a peace deal. Dominic Bellatus reports. The talks, the first between Russia and Ukraine for three years lasted just shy of two hours. There were no signs of progress. The ceasefire Ukraine and its allies have been pushing for has so far failed to materialise. With reports, Russia made unrealistic demands during the meeting, including ultimatums for Ukraine to withdraw from territory in exchange for a pause in the fighting. Like Russia's Vladimir Putin, Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy didn't attend today's talks in Turkey, but he was following events from the sidelines of a European summit in Albania.
Starting point is 00:01:58 If the Russian representatives in Istanbul today cannot even agree to that, to ceasefire, to this clearly necessary first step, then it will be 100% clear that Putin continues to undermine diplomacy. Dominic Velaitis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia. Prime Minister Mark Carney flies to Rome today for Pope Leo's inaugural mass. Sunday's ceremony at St. Peter's Square marks the official start of a pope's term. Carney is expecting to meet with a number of world leaders also making the trip. That includes US Vice President JD Vance and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is also expected to attend. The man convicted of
Starting point is 00:02:42 attacking author Salman Rushdie three years ago has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. 27-year-old Hadi Matter was found guilty of attempted murder and assault back in February. Rushdie was attacked while on stage at a literary event in New York State. The 77-year-old was stabbed more than a dozen times, leaving him blind in one eye. The attack came 33 years after Iran called for Rushdie's death, following his publication of the novel, The Satanic Verses. Hospital officials in Gaza say more than 80 people were killed overnight, as Israel's latest military campaign in the territory continues.
Starting point is 00:03:18 And Palestinian sources are saying it's not just airstrikes. They say the attacks are now coming by land, sea, and air. Crystal Gmancing has the latest. Explosions in the night, panic searches of rubble and daybreak, with intensifying strikes seemingly focused mostly on central and northern areas. We're not immune in any way and sensitive to the suffering of the people of Gaza. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday acknowledged the worsening humanitarian crisis. Israel has been blocking humanitarian aid since early March. We're looking at Gaza.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Today, U.S. President Donald Trump, still in the Middle East, said the U.S. is going to take care of that. Israel's security cabinet approved plans to expand its military offensive against Hamas earlier this month. The full force of the Israeli military would be used, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to destroy Hamas and rescue the remaining hostages. An increased offensive, reports Israeli media, could start after President Trump leaves the region. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, London.
Starting point is 00:04:25 The Sunday Times is out today with its annual Rich List. And there's a familiar name in the top 10. London-based Galen Weston and his family are listed as the sixth richest family in Britain. The Westons own Primark, the London department store Fortnum and Mason, and of course, Loblaws and Shoppers Drug Mart. The paper says the Weston family has an estimated wealth
Starting point is 00:04:46 of $33 billion Canadian. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
