From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fague. A judge alone will decide the guilt
or innocence of five former world junior hockey players at their sex assault trial in London, Ontario.
Justice Maria Carossia has dismissed the jury in the case,
which focuses on one incident in London, Ontario in 2018.
Ali Shiason explains why.
The concern here is about jury prejudice.
It stems from a note that was submitted Thursday
to the judge written by a juror on behalf of other jurors. It specifically called out two defense attorneys, saying they appeared
to quote, whisper to each other and laugh as if they were discussing our jurors appearance.
Quote, this is unprofessional and unacceptable, the note said. All of the defense teams felt
this is now jury prejudice that needed to be resolved. Justice Maria Carosia decided
the only way forward is judge alone. In a statement, defense lawyer Dan Brown said this was an unfortunate misrepresentation
of just two attorneys talking amongst themselves. Quote, the very idea of counsel making light
of a juror is illogical and runs directly counter to our purpose and function. On Thursday,
Carusia herself said she didn't observe any of this behavior from Brown and that she would have stepped in if she had. After one mistrial
already, here we have another jury being dismissed. Ali Chiesin, CBC News, London, Ontario.
Volunteers in rural Nova Scotia say they're resuming their search for two missing children.
Our team has been called and PECTO has been called and I believe Strait has been called.
I don't know if any other teams have been called at this point.
President of Colchester Ground Search and Rescue Kevin McLean says RCMP asked them to
get their team back together.
Six-year-old Lily Sullivan and their four-year-old brother Jack have been missing for two weeks
with no clues as to where they went.
RCMP scaled back their
search last week but are following up on more than 180 tips from the public. McLean says
they're going to work out the details and will begin what is likely a recovery search
Saturday morning. Officials are calling it the darkest day in Vancouver's history. The
city has announced preliminary findings into last month's Alapu Lapu tragedy. The report says that the event was well organized
and safety protocols were followed. Still, 11 people were killed in the incident
at a crowded community festival. Here's Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim.
We will not let fear define us. We will not let it divide us. We will stand
together, but we do owe it to everyone.
We owe it to those who we've lost. We owe it to every single person who calls Vancouver
home to take every step possible to prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again.
Vancouver police have since bought 16 mobile vehicle barriers to be used for future events
and will assess
their use before deciding whether to buy more.
They are also reviewing security arrangements ahead of this summer's Pride celebrations.
Several prison inmates are on the run in New Orleans.
Police say 10 men were able to exit the Louisiana prison through a wall behind a toilet.
One has since been recaptured.
Officials say the men should be considered armed and dangerous, with some of them facing murder
charges. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hudson says they likely didn't act alone. There is no way
people can get out of this facility without there being some type of lapse in security. There's no
way. It's almost impossible, not completely, but
almost impossible for anybody to get out of this facility without help from the outside.
Hudson says that there are indications the inmates received help from inside her department.
The parish sheriff says the incident also highlights an urgent need for facility repairs
and better staffing. She says the prison needs $5 million alone to pay for locks.
A shooting at a Las Vegas gym has left two people dead,
including the shooter.
Three others were injured,
one critically according to authorities.
Local authorities say gunfire erupted inside
the Las Vegas athletic club in the city's west side.
The suspect in the shooting died in hospital.
Police say they are still investigating The suspect in the shooting died in hospital. Police say
they are still investigating a motive for the shooting.
And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Peek.
