Three weeks into the sexual assault
Starting point is 00:00:39 trial of five former Team Canada junior hockey players, the judge has discharged the entire jury. Katie Nicholson tells us what happened and where the trial goes from here. On Thursday, the jury sent a note to the judge, which accused Alex Formenton's lawyers, Daniel Brown and Hilary Dudding, of judging and making fun of them. After arguments from the Crown in defense on what to do next, Justice Maria Carosia decided to discharge the jury. Formenton's legal team, Brown and Dudding, sent out a press release calling the incident
Starting point is 00:01:10 an unfortunate misinterpretation. No defense counsel would risk alienating a juror, the statement said. The defense teams argued the accusations threatened to tank the jury and the trial. It just contaminates everything. Rishi Gill is a criminal defence lawyer and former crown in Vancouver. He has no involvement in this trial.
Starting point is 00:01:31 And I think once that accusation is made, whether there's foundation or not, it's really going to put things in jeopardy and that's what's happened. The fates of the five accused now up to a judge alone. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, London, Ontario. A report from the Industrial Inquiry Commission recommends phasing out daily door-to-door letter mail delivery for individual addresses. The report was commissioned after a labour dispute at Canada Post.
Starting point is 00:01:58 The report calls for the lifting of moratoriums on rural post office closures and community mailbox conversions. It also says Canada Post must be able to hire part-time employees for weekend deliveries. Israel has launched a new offensive in Gaza. The goal, they say, is to flush out Hamas and conquer the territory. Dozens are dead after poundings from land, air and sea. Paul Hunter reports. Local officials say hundreds of Gazans have been killed just since Sunday with the expectation it's about to get significantly worse. Israel pledging an escalation of its assaults in the days to come, insisting again it needs to destroy Hamas, the terror group that governs Gaza, which reignited the fighting there with its attacks on Israel October 7, 2023. A lot of people are starving on Gaza. U.S. President Donald Trump on his way back to the U.S. after a trip to the broader Middle
Starting point is 00:03:07 East region, telling reporters he wants to end the misery. But as the United Nations warned this week, the situation for countless Palestinians right now is beyond dire. Paul Hunter, CBC News, Washington. Meanwhile, Trump has accused the former FBI Director James Comey of using a coded Instagram post to call for his assassination. The post showed an image of 86-47 spelt out in seashells. 86 can be slang for kill, and Trump is the 47th president.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Speaking to Fox News, Trump dismissed Comey's claim that he was unaware the photo might have violent connotations. The FBI director, and you don't know what that meant, that meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear. Now he wasn't very competent, but he was competent enough to know what that meant. The Toronto Maple Leafs have forced a seventh and deciding game in their Stanley Cup playoff series with Florida. Warner comes up with a puck. Here comes Matthews. There! Scores!
Starting point is 00:04:11 Austin Matthews has scored for Toronto! As seen on CBC and Roger Sportsnet, Austin Matthews snapped a scoreless game early in the third period with his third goal of the postseason. Max Patoretti also scored and Joseph Wall made 22 saves for the shutout as the Leafs beat the Panthers 2-0 forcing the series clinching game back in Toronto Sunday night. The Ottawa Chargers have clinched the spot in the finals of the PWHL playoffs. They beat the Montreal Victoire 2-1 Friday night earning a trip to the Walter Cup final. They'll face the defending champion Minnesota Frost. That series begins Tuesday in Ottawa.
