Starting point is 00:00:00 How did the internet go from this? You could actually find what you were looking for right away, bound to this. I feel like I'm in hell. Spoiler alert, it was not an accident. I'm Cory Doctorow, host of Who Broke the Internet from CBC's Understood. In this four-part series, I'm going to tell you
Starting point is 00:00:20 why the internet sucks now, whose fault it is, and my plan to fix it. Find who broke the internet on whatever terrible app you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Claude Fay. Prime Minister Mark Carney is now in Rome, ahead of Pope Leo XIV's inaugural mass on Sunday. Now along with attending the inauguration, Carney is expected to have bilateral meetings with several world leaders. The prime minister's office has already confirmed
Starting point is 00:00:54 that Carney will meet with Italian prime minister Georgia Maloney. The Ukrainian military says a Russian drone strike has hit a civilian bus in the Sumi region, killing at least nine people. Four others were injured. The attack came a day after Russian and Ukrainian representatives held direct peace talks in Istanbul. Ihor Tchenko is the head of Sumi's military administration. The attack occurred as the bus was leaving the city of Bilopilje.
Starting point is 00:01:26 As a result of this inhumane strike, there are fatalities and injuries. The exact number of casualties is being clarified. Emergency medical services, the state emergency service and the police are working at the scene. Russia claims the attack was on a Ukrainian military staging area. As Canadians hit the road this long weekend, a tactic by one Ontario police force to combat distracted driving is stirring debate. They're using drones to catch those texting and driving.
Starting point is 00:01:58 But as Dan Tacoma reports, some say it's a breach of privacy. Drivers who recently passed through three intersections in Kingston, Ontario, had no idea they were being watched. But high above them, a police drone hovered, zooming in and catching 20 people using their phones. There are a lot of Kingston residents who find it creepy and are asking whether it's legal, and in our view, it isn't. Josh DeHaas is with the Canadian Constitution Foundation. He sent a letter to Kingston's police chief
Starting point is 00:02:27 saying it amounts to an unreasonable search. Kingston Police Chief Scott Fraser says police aren't snooping on people's screens. We're trying to keep the roadways safe. Fraser says in the past, police have boarded public transit or even school buses to try and catch distracted drivers. What's the difference of me sitting in a truck
Starting point is 00:02:44 looking down in your window than a drone at 120 feet looking down in your window? The chief says police did not seek any authorization before the approach took off. But if a court decides they can't catch distracted drivers this way, the drone will stay grounded. Dan Tacoma, CBC News, Kingston, Ontario. Three weeks into the sexual assault trial of five former Team Canada junior hockey players, the judge in the case has discharged the entire jury. Katie Nicholson tells us what happened and where the trial goes from here.
Starting point is 00:03:16 On Thursday, the jury sent a note to the judge, which accused Alex Fermenton's lawyers, Daniel Brown and Hilary Dudding, of judging and making fun of them. After arguments from the Crown and Defense on what to do next, Justice Maria Carosia decided to discharge the jury. Formenton's legal team, Brown and Dudding, sent out a press release calling the incident an unfortunate misinterpretation. No defense counsel would risk alienating a juror, the statement said. The defense teams argued the accusations threatened to tank the jury and the trial.
Starting point is 00:03:49 It just contaminates everything. Rishi Gill is a criminal defense lawyer and former crown in Vancouver. He has no involvement in this trial. And I think once that accusation is made, whether there's foundation or not, it's really going to put things in jeopardy and that's what's happened. The fates of the five accused now up to a judge alone. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, London, Ontario. The Toronto Maple Leafs have forced the seventh in deciding game in their Stanley Cup playoff series with the Florida Panthers.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Barner comes up with a puck, here comes Matthews, FIRED! SCORES! Austin Matthews has scored for Toronto. As seen on CBC and Roger's Sportsnet, Matthews scored in the third period with his third goal of the postseason as the Leafs beat the Panthers 2-0 last night. The deciding game is set for Sunday night. Tonight down 3-2, the Winnebago Jets look to avoid elimination in Game 6 of their series with the Dallas Stars in Texas. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fink.
