Starting point is 00:00:37 U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he intends to speak with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, next week. Trump's statement came hours after a drone strike killed at least nine people in Ukraine aboard a bus evacuating a battle zone. Dominic Valaitis reports. Starting point is 00:01:04 described as a bloodbath and one he claimed was killing thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers every week. Trump is hoping Monday will be a productive day, saying he also plans to speak with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and various members of NATO. The news comes just hours after a Russian drone strike killed nine bus passengers in Ukraine's Sumy region. Although Russia claims it had struck a military target, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike as a war crime and called for stronger sanctions on Moscow in response.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Dominic Velaitis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia. In Rome, Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. It is a great pleasure to meet you, Mr Prime Minister. Mattarella congratulating Carney on his election victory and highlighting the two countries' close ties. The Prime Minister is in Rome to attend tomorrow's inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV. He's also meeting with world leaders, including Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Maloney. In Nova Scotia, the search is resuming for two children. Six-year-old Lily Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack disappeared from their Pictou
Starting point is 00:02:16 County home just over two weeks ago. Not only will crews be combing dense forests, there will also be air support. Nearly two dozen people are dead after a series of storms tore through the U.S. and as searchers go through the wreckage, officials warn they're expecting the death count will rise. Steve Fetterman has this update. Across the Midwest and in parts of the South, they are assessing the damage. We've had a lot of houses destroyed. Those who survived are thankful.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Derek Perkins is a pastor in St. Louis. His church suffered significant damage. I'm a resident here in St. Louis. I was born and raised here. I've never seen anything like this. In Somerset, Kentucky, Marshall Todd was a bit in shock. Roofs are gone, windows are gone, people are outside. Luckily no injuries.
Starting point is 00:03:02 I don't know how we survived. But others are not as fortunate. The death count is rising in Kentucky alone. More than a dozen people have died. In Missouri, there was this brief moment of joy. Cheers when a man trapped in the rubble of a collapsed house was rescued. His sister thankful. Blessed. We feel blessed. The National Weather Service says the severe weather is likely to continue into early next week. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles. It's the May long weekend but winter still has its grip in parts of the country. Snow is in the forecast for some areas of British Columbia.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Michelle Morton has the story. Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Seikone says a system moving in is bringing cooler air and unsettled moisture. Going to give some showers across the province as well as the possibility of snow on the highest mountain passes. The BC wildfire service says this doesn't mean people should not worry about any open fire risk and information officer Taylor Coleman says there are some fire bans in place. So it's really important to be careful with any activity that could potentially spark a wildfire. BC Ferry's spokesperson, Shirin Sayani, is advising passengers to keep an eye on current conditions and to plan ahead.
Starting point is 00:04:21 If reservations are sold out, there's a number of other things you can consider. Tra Traveling off peak, so early mornings and late evenings, walking on as a foot passenger. YVR is expecting a 12% passenger increase compared to last year and recommends travelers check their flight status ahead of time. Michelle Morton, CBC News, Vancouver.
