Israel has launched a major operation in Gaza. Officials say the military is ramping up attacks to pressure Hamas to release remaining hostages. The new offensive comes as Israel faces growing international pressure to lift its humanitarian aid blockade and as ceasefire talks resume. Phil Bleszanak reports. Code-named Gideon's chariots, Israel's defense forces say its military operation is aimed at
Starting point is 00:01:33 seizing strategic areas in the Gaza Strip. And again the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Gattarej, who is at the Arab League summit, called for an end to the Israeli blockade of aid into Gaza. The situation of Palestinians is beyond description, beyond the thrushes. The policy of siege and starvation makes them mockery of international law. U.S. President Donald Trump just returned from the Gulf region, where he suggested Gaza be declared a freedom zone. Former Israeli government adviser, Alamam Pinkes says Trump appears to
Starting point is 00:02:05 be putting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu needs to end the war. The only person that can make him end the war is Donald Trump. But he worries Trump will get distracted by other issues and allow a ceasefire to slip away. Philip LeShannok, CBC News, Toronto. At least 25 people are dead after a series of storms tore through the U.S. Steve Futterman has this update. Across the Midwest and in parts of the South, they are assessing the damage.
Starting point is 00:02:33 We've had a lot of houses destroyed. Those who survived are thankful. Derek Perkins is a pastor in St. Louis. His church suffered significant damage. I'm a resident here in St. Louis. I was born and raised here. Never seen anything like this. In Somerset, Kentucky, Marshall Todd was a bit in shock. Roofs are gone, windows are gone, people are outside.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Luckily, no injuries. I don't know how we survived. But others are not as fortunate. The death count is rising in Kentucky alone. More than a dozen people have died. In Missouri, there was this brief moment of joy. Cheers when a man trapped in the rubble of a collapsed house was rescued. His sister thankful. Blessed. We feel blessed. The National Weather Service says the severe weather is likely to continue into early next week. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:03:25 In Palm Springs, California, at least one person is dead after a bomb exploded near a fertility clinic in the city. Police are describing it as an intentional act of violence. It happened in the late morning and the blast extended for blocks. Witness Carl Schreier describes the scene. You could see the wall had blown out. It wasn't even a door. It even looked like a door or something had been there. But it was the wall and everything was strewn out. Even a copier machine that was in the building was clear across the street. The tiles were off on other buildings. The glass almost a block circumference. All the windows were broken.
Starting point is 00:04:00 The owner of the fertility clinic told the Associated Press that all the staff are safe and accounted for and no patients inside the clinic With no patients in the clinic at the time. He also says all stored embryos were unharmed Now for the song that won the Eurovision grand final tonight Classically trained JJ of Austria took home the top prize with the tune Wasted Love. Israel's Yuval Raphael came second. The competition set in Basel, Switzerland this year features acts from 26 countries. They performed to some 160 million viewers. And that is your World This Hour.
