Starting point is 00:00:38 To Rome. Crowds have arrived in Vatican City awaiting the inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV. The new pontiff waved at those on hand as he rode on the back of the Pope Mobile for the first time. The 69-year-old will hold the mass in St. Peter's Square at 10 a.m. local time, in front of tens of thousands. Prime Minister Mark Carney will be among dozens of world leaders in European royalty on hand. Leo, the first American to hold the post, was elected Pope on May the 8th. Russia intensified its drone attacks against Ukraine
Starting point is 00:01:15 overnight. Firefighters trying to douse flames from one of the many drone attacks. According to the Ukrainian military, Russia launched a total of 273 exploding and decoy drones, considered the most intense attack since the start of the invasion in 2022. Kyiv's regional governor says a woman was killed and three others were injured in a drone attack in her region. Ukraine says it intercepted 88 of the drones launched while most of the rest were lost. The increased barrage came after the first direct talks between Moscow and Kiev in years on Friday failed to yield a ceasefire.
Starting point is 00:01:56 A shipping accident in the East River in Brooklyn, New York has left two people dead and 19 others injured. Video posted to social media shows the moment a Mexican tall ship with 277 people on board lost its way and crashed underneath the iconic Brooklyn bridge, sharing off the ship's mass that then fell to the deck. Wilson Aramboles is chief of special operations for the New York City Police Department. The ship was departing from Pier 17 where it was heading out to sea. The pilot, the captain that was
Starting point is 00:02:37 maneuvering the ship, lost I guess power of the ship and the current mechanical function caused the ship to go right into the pillar of the bridge, hitting the mass of the ship where there was a couple of sailors on top of it. The ship was on a multi-country tour scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 countries. The Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer major damage. Canada now has a minister of artificial intelligence. It's a new role, but the demands are already piling up. Catherine Tunney reports.
Starting point is 00:03:13 I, Evan Solomon, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to... Former broadcaster and newly elected Toronto Centre MP Evan Solomon was sworn in earlier this week as the minister responsible for artificial intelligence and digital innovation. So what does the job actually look like? There's no public mandate letters yet, but the Prime Minister's office pointed CBC to the Liberal platform. It says a Mark Carney government will be relentless in using AI to make government more efficient and improve service delivery to Canadians.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Boye Gojo is a Canada research chair in governance and artificial intelligence at Carleton University. He says that could look like AI power chat bots helping Canadians get basic information from the government in any language they need at any hour of the day. In a way that is really, really comprehensive, even more comprehensive than what a human agent at the other side may be able to provide. The platform also calls for more Canada-owned and operated AI data centers and infrastructure. Catherine Tunney, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:04:14 To the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Cup quest is over for the Winnipeg Jets. That's the minutes, second to Holly Starr! As seen on CBC and Roger Sportsnet, the Dallas Stars scored on the power play early in the first overtime to beat the Jets 2-1 in Dallas and win their Western Conference Semi-Final Series in six games. Kitchener Ontario native Mark Shieffley scored the lone Jets goal and carried a heavy heart into the game following the passing of his father Brad on Friday night. And that is your World This Hour.
