Carly Fortune became the queen of Canadian romance with her breakout hit Every Summer After.
On my podcast Bookends, Carly told me all about the life-changing success of that book,
and she dished on her newest summer love story.
Two young women wait to the end of my signing line once and then said,
we have a bone to pick with you.
And they said, we need Charlie's happy ending. Justice for Charlie.
Check out Bookends with Matea Roach to hear the rest of that conversation wherever you
get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Gina Louise Phillips. The Israeli Prime Minister's
office says a team in Qatar is looking at a deal to end the war, release all hostages and disarm and exile Hamas.
This after more than 100 people died in overnight Israeli attacks across Gaza.
Anna Cunningham has more.
A mother picks through destroyed children's clothes close to where this latest strike
hit.
This tainted encampment in Khan Yunis now scattered with people's
belongings. Gaza's health authority claims amongst the dead were children.
The Israel Defense Forces says its operations this weekend have, in their words,
eliminated dozens of terrorists and they claim dismantled significant terrorist
infrastructure as well as locating Hamas tunnels and explosives.
In the central area of Al-Zawada, a three-storey house now collapsed into rubble.
Israel has already called up tens of thousands of reservists for what it has previously said
is military action to ramp up pressure on Hamas to agree to a temporary ceasefire. Hamas has confirmed that a new round of indirect talks with Israel is underway in Doha, Qatar.

And in Rome.
Pope Leo XIV speaks to tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square in his inaugural
Mass. In the speech, the new pontiff vowed to work for unity so the Catholic Church becomes
a sign of peace in the world. He also spoke out against an economic paradigm that exploits
the earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest. World leaders are also in Vatican
City and attended the inaugural Mass, among them Prime Minister Mark Carney. Tom Perry has that story.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and the official Canadian delegation have been watching the Pope's inaugural mass from their seats in St. Peter's Square, close to where Leo XIV has been leading the ceremony. Money. Canada is one of many countries that have sent official representatives to today's event and Carney has used this occasion
to meet with a number of European leaders in the lead-up to his chairing of the G7 Summit
next month in Cananascis, Alberta. This morning the Prime Minister met with the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz with Merz mentioning
he's looking forward to attending that G7 Summit that's coming up.
Yesterday Carney sat down with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,
with Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgio Maloney, and with Ukrainian president
Volodymyr Zelensky, who in fact invited Carney to visit Ukraine. Now, leaders
attending today's ceremony will be meeting the Pope afterward. It's going to
be a chance for them to pay their respects. Tom Perry, CBC News, The Vatican.
Russia escalated its drone attacks against Ukraine overnight.
Firefighters trying to douse flames from what is considered the most intense strike
since the start of the invasion in 2022. According to the Ukrainian military,
Russia launched a total of 273
exploding and decoy drones. Ukraine says it intercepted 88 of the drones launched,
while most of the rest were lost. The increased barrage came after the first
direct talks and years on Friday failed to yield a ceasefire. Well, it's been 32
years since that Canadian team won the Stanley Cup and hockey fans are
hoping this could be the year to change all that.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are now in the second round of the playoffs with another big game
tonight.
CBC's Trevor Party sets it up for us.
If Toronto can win tonight, that means they're in the Eastern Conference final for the first
time since 2002.
It would be the Carolina Hurricanes they would play in the Eastern Final.
Of course then, that would only be one step away from the Stanley Cup Final.
And we don't really need reminding, the last time the Leafs did win the Stanley Cup,
it's way back to our Centennial in 1967 when they defeated the Montreal Canadians. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers have booked their spot in the Western Conference Final
for the second consecutive year, taking on Dallas.
For CBC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
