Other People's Problems Season 5, available now.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. There is not much value in my judgment, and it's considered judgment, and it's judgment based on
experience, that there is not much value in trying to rush through a budget
in a very narrow window, three weeks, with a new cabinet.
Prime Minister Mark Carney defending his decision to present a budget this spring.
Speaking to reporters in Rome, he also points to the upcoming NATO meeting
as well as further discussions with the Americans. Carney says there will be more clarity in coming months on Canada's defence spending plans,
the overall economic outlook, and how to make the federal government more efficient.
While in Rome, Carney has been meeting with world leaders.
He'll be sitting down with US Vice President JD Vance today and is planning a call with
the US President.
The Prime Minister joined thousands of people
in St. Peter's Square to witness the inaugural mass
of Pope Leo XIV.
In his speech, the new pontiff vowed to work for unity
so the Catholic Church becomes a sign of peace in the world.
Leo also spoke out against an economic paradigm
that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalizes
the poorest.
The elaborate ceremony marked the start of his papacy.
Some tragic news now from Toronto.
Three children are dead after the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a suspected
drunk driver.
It happened just after 12.30 this morning local time at a highway off-ramp
near Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Police say four children and two adults were
in a vehicle that was stopped at a red light when they were hit. But here, Sir Bernard
Dan is with Toronto Police.
One person's decision to drink and drive, which is a fatal decision this person made,
and we as a problem police service, we educate the public of the dangers of drinking and driving and this is a result a family is
torn apart. A 19 year old man has been arrested and charged with multiple
impaired and dangerous driving offenses. A shipping accident in the East River in
Brooklyn, New York has left two people dead and 19 others injured. A Mexican
tall ship crashed into the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, shearing
off the ship's masts, that then fell to the deck. CBC's Mark Carcasoal has more.
This is a situation that was supposed to come with a lot of sort of ceremony. There were
a lot of onlookers watching this. It was for a lot of people, especially New Yorkers from
Mexico, a prideful moment that really drastically changed in a matter of seconds.
Two crew members were killed on this ship when it plowed into the Brooklyn Bridge.
The video online is absolutely shocking to watch, the way these masts just sort of crumple.
So this ship was never supposed to go through the East River in toward the Brooklyn Bridge.
It was supposed to turn south, head out to sea.
After a quick stop to refuel, it was going to go on to its next destination. But
according to early preliminary information from NYPD officials, it would seem that there
was some sort of mechanical issue. The ship lost power, ended up being carried by the
current into this devastating situation.
277 people were on board at the time of the collision. It's been 32 years since the Canadian team won the Stanley Cup and hockey fans are hoping
this could be the year to change all that.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are now in the second round of the playoffs with another big game
tonight.
CBC's Trevor Party sets it up for us.
If Toronto can win tonight, that means they're in the Eastern Conference final for the first
time since 2002.
It would be the Carolina Hurricanes they would play in the Eastern Final. Of course then,
that would only be one step away from the Stanley Cup Final. And we don't really need reminding,
the last time the Leafs did win the Stanley Cup, it's way back to our centennial in 1967
when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens.
And the Edmonton Oilers have booked their spot in the Western Conference Final for the second
consecutive year they'll be taking on Dallas. And that is The World This Hour. Remember,
