Starting point is 00:00:00 So, how did the Liberals manage to win government while the Conservatives also boosted their voter support with voters almost evenly split between the two? And what will this mean for hopes of some cooperation on Parliament Hill this spring? I'm Catherine Cullen and every Saturday on The House, we cut through the noise to make politics make sense. Follow us wherever you get your podcasts as we explore these questions and answer yours. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. It has metastasized to the bone but is
Starting point is 00:00:41 believed to be manageable. His office as the Biden family is assessing treatment options. Last year Biden dropped out of his bid for re-election amid concerns about his mental competency. After a nearly three-month blockade, Israel now says it will allow what it calls a basic amount of food into Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office says it's looking to prevent a hunger crisis. There's no timeline as to when that aid will start flowing. It comes as the army launches a major ground offensive.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Here's Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shahani. Our troops are operating deep in Gaza, eliminating threats, destroying terror infrastructure and taking control of key areas. This is what we plan on doing. Give advanced warnings to uninvolved civilians to make sure they get out of harm's way. Control the battlefield. Protect Israeli civilians and dismantle Hamas' leadership and capabilities. Officials in Gaza say Israeli airstrikes killed at least 100 people overnight into Sunday.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Meanwhile, informal peace talks are continuing in Doha, Qatar. A previous ceasefire ended in March. The Prime Minister is in Rome. He joined thousands of people in St. Peter's Square to witness the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV. The new pontiff vowed to work for unity so the Catholic Church becomes a sign of peace in the world. Leo also spoke about the economic paradigm that exploits the earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest. Prime Minister Mark Carney is defending his decision not to present a budget this spring.
Starting point is 00:02:18 There is not much value in my judgment, and it's considered judgment and it's judgment based on experience, that there is not much value in trying to rush through a budget in a very narrow window, three weeks, with a new cabinet. Carney then said his government will table a budget in the fall. That's a change in direction. The Liberals faced criticism in the last week after the Finance Minister said he would present a fall economic statement, which is more like a mini-budget. Carney pointed to the upcoming NATO meeting as well as further discussions with the Americans as reasons to table a federal budget this fall. In Toronto, three children were killed in an alleged impaired driving crash. It happened overnight at a highway off-ramp near Pearson Airport. Police Acting Inspector Baheir Serbanadan lays
Starting point is 00:03:05 out the sequence of events. There was a minivan with the family of four children and two adults stopped at a red light. It is alleged the Dodge Careman was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control, went over the raised median, collided with the minivan that was stopped. A 19-year-old man now faces multiple impaired and dangerous driving charges. The search for two missing children in rural Nova Scotia has resumed. Six-year-old Lily Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack have been missing since the beginning of the month. More than 100 searchers are again going through the woods. Search coordinator Amy Hansen says the conditions are horrible.
Starting point is 00:03:45 The dead fall from Hurricane Fiona is hampering a lot of people. The ticks are always a problem. We had some fresh bear prints found. RCMP say this phase of the search is focusing on the immediate area around the road where the home is located, about 140 kilometers northeast of Halifax. Elton John is accusing the UK government of theft over its proposals for artificial intelligence. They would allow tech companies to train AI models on British creative works without guaranteeing any compensation for creators. Big tech has so much money and if you're a young person and you're fighting big tech, good luck. I want the government to see sense. I mean, a machine can't create anything.
Starting point is 00:04:27 It can, but it doesn't have a soul, it doesn't have a heart, it doesn't have human feeling, it doesn't have passion. What machines have passion? John's not alone in this fight. Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and others also want the government to change course. The proposal would leave it up to the creators
Starting point is 00:04:42 to say they don't want their works used for AI. And that is your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
