From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips. South Asians across the country are raising concerns about their safety. Community members packed a town hall following the killing
of a businessman in Brampton, Ontario. Harjit Dutta's family believes he was a
victim of threats and extortion. His daughter Gurleen says not enough was
done to protect her father. Today it is our family, tomorrow it could be yours.
We're raising our voices to demand justice and real change. Peel police say
they believe the killing was targeted but haven't made arrests or named any suspects.
Last year RCMP said they obtained evidence linking Indian government agents to violent crimes in Canada
and it launched a national alliance to combat extortion last year.
In BC a number of South Asian business owners also say they have been targets of extortion threats in recent years.
U.S. President Donald Trump says he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin later
this morning to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Richard Madden is covering this story from Washington.
According to President Trump, he says the call is an attempt to, quote, stop the bloodbath
of the war in Ukraine, according to a social media post.
And this high stakes call between the two leaders follows a weekend of failed
peace talks in Turkey between Russia and Ukraine. It was proposed by Russia's
President Vladimir Putin, who in the end was a no-show. So that move angered
Western and Ukrainian delegations. European leaders are urging Russia to
accept the proposed 30-day ceasefire. Trump says he'll also be speaking with Ukrainian President Zelensky as well as members of NATO
once his call with Putin wraps up.
We'll see where this leads.
The demands from the two sides are very far apart.
Russia's saying it will only sign a truce if Ukraine effectively surrenders.

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
It's now spread to his bones.
Steve Futterman reports.
Joe Biden learned of his cancer diagnosis on Friday.
Yesterday his office released details.
It is an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has already spread to his bones, which
makes it stage four.
You know, obviously hearing news that you have a diagnosis of cancer and then that it
has spread to the bone is hard to hear.
Dr. Tanya Dorff is an expert in treating prostate cancer at the City of Hope Hospital near Los
Angeles.
The good news is that prostate cancer actually has a lot of effective treatments.
How Biden responds to the treatments will be the key.
Some aggressive forms of prostate cancer are difficult to control.
Political differences were put aside at least briefly yesterday after the announcement.
Donald Trump, who has lashed out at Biden repeatedly since taking office in January,
said in a written statement that he and First Lady Melania Trump are saddened to hear the
news.
And former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, I am praying for your full and speedy recovery. Steve Futterman for CBC News,
Los Angeles. 800 people from a First Nation in northwestern Ontario are out
of their homes. A fast-moving wildfire is threatening wobs among independent
nation. Residents have been flown to hotels in Niagara Falls. Meanwhile, some people who were forced to escape the wildfire near Lac du Boni,
Manitoba, are now allowed to return home. More than 800 people evacuated the area
starting last Tuesday, but yesterday Reeve Loren Schinkel said as many as
150 of them could return. Hundreds of others are still waiting to get the all
clear. Schinkel is urging them to be patient. I think that it's a matter of hours but
you know what we're taking it day by day here and we're working in conjunction
certainly with Manitoba Wildfire Services as well as the emergency
measures people that are on this. Schinkel also says the fire needs to be
better controlled before everyone can get back home. Well, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
And the defending Stanley Cup champions move on to the Eastern Conference Final.
It was a crushing loss at the Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto last night.
The Florida Panthers beat the Maple Leafs 6-1 in game seven of their second round series. The Edmonton
Oilers are now the only Canadian team left in the playoffs. Thanks for listening.
