How did the internet go from this?
You could actually find what you were looking for right away,
bound to this.
I feel like I'm in hell.
Spoiler alert, it was not an accident.
I'm Cory Doctorow, host of Who Broke the Internet
from CBC's Understood.
In this four-part series, I'm going to tell you
why the internet sucks now, whose fault it is,
and my plan to fix it. Find Who Broke
the Internet on whatever terrible app you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Stephanie Scanderis. We begin in Washington.
We just spent two and a half hours talking to Vladimir Putin, and I think some progress
has been made.
U.S. President Donald Trump says Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations
toward a ceasefire.
He says he believes his call with Russian President Vladimir Putin went well.
Trump added the nature of those peace talks would be negotiated between Moscow and Kiev.
After the call, Putin said contact between delegations had resumed. He suggested
Moscow is prepared to discuss compromises but did not provide details. Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he is doubtful that Russia is serious about peace.
Canada is among nearly two dozen countries calling on Israel to fully reopen humanitarian
aid delivery to Gaza. Today's statement also stresses the need for the UN to be allowed to do its work in the
territory to save lives.
Today a handful of trucks entered Gaza for the first time in 11 weeks.
Food security agencies warn 2.1 million Palestinians are at dire risk of famine.
Spokesperson James Elder with UNICEF says the rate of malnutrition
in children is doubling. We need some of the thousands and thousands of trucks
that are at that border to flow into Gaza. It can't just be tokenistic. It
can't just be in the south. We need those 400 distribution points in Gaza to be
utilized, not drip, drip, drip to prevent political pressure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says famine must be avoided from a quote
practical and diplomatic standpoint. Israel says the blockade was meant to put pressure on Hamas
to release hostages still held in Gaza.
NTSB investigators say there was no significant structural damage to Brooklyn Bridge
after a tall ship crashed
into it on the weekend. Two sailors died and 22 others were injured when the Mexican ship
sailed into the bridge. The agency says the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The Toronto Star is identifying the three siblings killed in an alleged impaired driving
incident in the city. A longtime family friend
making the confirmation to the newspaper on Monday. The CBC's Allie Chyasson has more
on the victims, the crash and the charges.
– Ramon, Jace and Maya Lavina, all siblings, are the three children who died in Sunday
morning's crash. Their mother, Jade Galv, suffered broken ribs and a concussion but
is expected to live, along with her 10-year-old son Avery, who suffered a broken arm and collar bone.
This new information, published by the Toronto Star, comes as an outpouring of
support grows in a GoFundMe set up for the Lavina family. Meanwhile, 19-year-old
Ethan L'Houlier faces multiple impaired driving charges. Toronto police say he was
drunk behind the wheel of a Dodge Caravan, allegedly speeding down a highway off-ramp onto Renforth Drive in Etobicoke,
where the accident happened. L'Houlier was arrested on scene. People have been laying
flowers at the crash site. Also sharing her condolences, Jennifer Neville Lake, who lost
her three children in a drunk driving crash 10 years ago, posting on X, quote, I'm so, so
sorry in grief and solidarity.
Ali Shiasan, CBC News, Toronto.
Canada Post says it has received strike notices from the union representing its workers.
They indicate the Canadian Union of Postal Workers intends to begin strike activity at
midnight on Friday, May 23rd.
The last work stoppage led to the pile-up of millions of packages around the holiday
season.
The Canada Industrial Relations Board ordered both sides back to work and extended the collective
agreement to May 22nd.
The union and the postal service have been holding talks but without much progress.
Later this year, a 50-year-old kids' show will find itself in a new location.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?
The answer will be Netflix.
Its new streaming deal gives Sesame Street a new home,
after Warner Bros. Discovery decided not to renew the show for HBO Max last year.
Select past episodes will be available on Netflix and Sesame Street
will also continue to air on PBS.
And that is Your World This Hour. I'm Stephanie Scandaris.
