Two staffers of the Israeli Embassy in Washington were shot and killed after leaving a fundraising event at the
Starting point is 00:00:44 Capital Jewish Museum Wednesday night. The single shooter, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, was later detained and arrested. Reporter Steve Futterman has the latest. The killings took place outside of Washington's Capitol Jewish Museum, where a cultural event was taking place. Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith. Prior to the shooting, the suspect was observed pacing back and forth outside of the museum. The motive for the shooting may have been the ongoing disputes in the Middle East. The suspect chanted, free, free Palestine while in custody. The two people killed were a couple.

Starting point is 00:01:46 U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with the Israeli ambassador on the phone and expressed condolences. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Los Angeles. Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a mandate letter to his cabinet after a two-day retreat top of the priority list, establishing a new economic and security relationship with the U.S. As Olivia Stefanovic reports, the focus is also on strengthening ties with other trading partners. Starting point is 00:02:17 Prime Minister Mark Carney says the days of Canada steadily deepening economic relations with the U. the US are over. We are in a position now where we cooperate when necessary but not necessarily cooperate. Carney says he's pursuing cooperation with other allies including Europeans. But when it comes to the US, Carney says his government will cooperate on ballistic missile defence. Canada is in high-level talks about joining the Golden Dome Defence Shield, a project estimated to cost at least $175 billion US, with US President Donald Trump insisting Canada will pay its fair share, though Carney isn't yet putting a price tag on how much his government would be willing

Canada, Uruguay and Spain are among the countries calling for accountability from Israel after Israeli soldiers fired shots near the international diplomatic delegation visiting the occupied West Bank. No injuries were reported in the incident in the flashpoint city of Jenin. The Israeli military accused the delegation of straying from a previously agreed route.
