There is shock and sorrow around the
Starting point is 00:00:39 world over what US officials are calling a targeted and anti-Semitic crime. A suspect is now charged with murder for the killing of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. yesterday. Katie Simpson has the latest. 30-year-old Yaron Leshinsky and 26-year-old Sarah Milgram were leaving an event organized by an American Jewish advocacy group. Police say they were shot dead by a gunman who'd been pacing back and forth in front of the entrance. This attack was targeted anti-Semitic violence and it won't be tolerated. Steve Jensen, the lead FBI agent on this case, says investigators are combing through the suspect's electronic devices, his social media posts, and trying to verify an apparent manifesto. Thirty-one-year-old Elias Rodriguez is now charged with first-degree murder,
Starting point is 00:01:28 murder of foreign officials, and several other weapons charges. Interim D.C. Attorney Jeanine Pirro expects more counts to be added. We're going to continue to investigate this as a hate crime and a crime of terrorism. And we will add additional charges as the evidence warrants. Court documents say he told police, I did it for Palestine. I did it for Gaza. Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington. Meanwhile, the Canadian government is condemning the murders in Washington and expressing concern
Starting point is 00:01:58 about a rise in anti-Semitism. Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is devastated and appalled by the shootings and promises extra funding to fight hate crimes. A midnight strike deadline means in just a few hours Canada Post workers could be off the job. Deliveries could be stalled for people and businesses across the country. Sophia Harris has more. I'm getting a ton of emails and reach outs from small business owners
Starting point is 00:02:25 panicking about the absence of Canada Post. Dan Kelly is president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. He says more than three quarters of small companies rely on Canada Post. I don't know how much more uncertainty we can throw at small business owners across Canada right now. We already have of course the US tariff situation On Wednesday, the Crown Corporation made its latest offer. It includes a more than 13 percent wage increase over four years. But it also calls for the creation of part-time jobs to give the corporation more flexibility, especially on weekends. That's a sticking point for the Canadian
Starting point is 00:03:00 Union of Postal Workers, says Ian Lee, a business professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. They do see it as a slippery slope, a much smaller Canada post and a much smaller union as a consequence. The union says it's analyzing the corporation's offer and working on counteroffers. Sophia Harris, CBC News, Toronto. The Trump administration has blocked Harvard University from enrolling foreign students. And Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem says she's not ruling out similar action at other schools. The administration has accused America's oldest university of anti-Semitism.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Harvard calls the move unlawful. Finance ministers from the G7 countries have wrapped up meetings in Banff. Canada's Francois-Philippe Champagne says all agree to cooperate on several issues. I can think about supply chain resiliency. I can think about tackling financial crime. I can think also about the menu of growth and enhancing policies that we have put on the table that we have discussed with international organizations. So we have achieved, I would say, when I look at where we are to where we are today and the journey ahead of us, we're on a good track.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Ukraine's finance minister was also at the summit in action against Russia on the agenda. Champagne says blocking countries who aided Russia's war effort from taking part in Ukraine's reconstruction was an important G7 achievement. The NHL's most valuable team is parting ways with its president. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today they would not be renewing the contract of Brendan Shanahan who held the post for over 11 years. During that time the team went through three head coaches, three general managers, and managed just a pair of playoff series wins bowing out in the second round to Florida last Sunday.
