Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, so I'm Tom Power. I host the award-winning interview show Cue, and it's not just about art. It's also a podcast that delves into conversations with artists as to why we create at all. Like you'll hear boy genius member Lucy Dacus open up about why she's dead dissatisfied with the way we talk about love. You'll hear Cate Blanchett describe what it's like to forget the sound of your own voice. And you'll hear how Coleman Domingo actually honed his acting skills in the circus. Listen to Q with me, Tom Power, wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Canada's postal workers had planned to walk off the job this morning, but at least for the time being, that strike action is on hold, with the postal workers union instead opting for a work to rule campaign. Following talks late last night with the Crown Corporation, the union is saying this will limit delivery disruptions and lost days for its members. Canada Post says despite there being no full work stoppage, there could still be delays in service. The postal workers have been without a contract now for close to a year and a half.
Starting point is 00:01:14 As part of its promised response to the threat of foreign interference, the federal government announced last year that it would be establishing a foreign agent registry. But now, months later, it's not clear where the government is on that promise. Catherine Tunney explains. I declare the motion carried. It's been nearly a year since the Liberals foreign interference legislation sailed quickly through the House. But getting a core part of that bill I've been running appears to have stalled. The foreign transparency registry would require agents acting on behalf of foreign states to register with the federal government or
Starting point is 00:01:50 face deep fines and jail time. But a spokesperson for public safety says several steps are needed before that can start happening, like finding a commissioner and building the IT needed to support the office. Gloria Fung speaks for a coalition of community groups calling on the government to bring in the registry. She says it could help diaspora communities who are the direct victims of foreign order harassment, including from China. And if we do not take concrete action, it's going to get worse. The government did not respond when asked when the registry will be operational. Catherine Tunney, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Today marks three weeks since two young children were reported missing from their home in rural Nova Scotia. As part of the ongoing investigation, one area resident is saying the RCMP has asked her for hours of footage from her trail cameras. Kayla Hounsell reports. So these are the cameras that we like to use. Melissa Scott points to a small camera she's mounted to a tree. She has seven of them set up around her property, which is more than an eight kilometer drive from where Lily and Jack Sullivan were reported missing from their
Starting point is 00:02:58 home on May 2nd. This week Scott says two RCMP officers from the major crime unit showed up asking for footage dating back five days before the children's parents called 911. I did mention to them that I was very happy to see them and glad that they were canvassing a little further and looking at trail cam footage. And they did respond saying that they probably should have been around earlier. Police say they were told six-year-old Lily and four-year-old Jack had wandered away from their home in Lansdowne Station, an extremely rural area about 140 kilometers northeast of Halifax. It sparked an extensive search through dense woods. The RCMP declined an interview request. Kayla Hounsell, CBC News, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
Starting point is 00:03:45 At least 23 people were killed by Israeli airstrikes across Gaza overnight. The deaths calm as Israel presses ahead with its military offensive and ignores calls for restraint. Israel is facing mounting international criticism for this latest offensive and mounting pressure to let aid into Gaza admit a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. This trip has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly three months. U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a gala dinner last night for investors in his cryptocurrency. Mr. President, are people buying into it with you? That's reporters calling out to the president as he disembarks from the Marine One helicopter, the dinner at his golf course near Washington was for the top investors in his cryptocurrency.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Trump launched the currency shortly before his inauguration in January. Critics say it's a conflict of interest that allows people to buy access to the White House. And it's believed foreign investors were at the dinner. That has led to claims of a potential national security threat. And Democrats are demanding that Trump release the dinner's invitation list. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
