How did the internet go from this?
You could actually find what you were looking for right away,
bound to this.
I feel like I'm in hell.
Spoiler alert, it was not an accident.
I'm Cory Doctorow, host of Who Broke the Internet
from CBC's Understood.
In this four-part series, I'm going to tell you
why the internet sucks now, whose fault it is,
and my plan to fix it. Find Who Broke
the Internet on whatever terrible app you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Julianne Hazelwood. Reports out of Gaza say an Israeli
airstrike killed nine of a doctor's 10 children. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Alaa El-Nijer
was on duty when it happened.
Her husband and son were wounded.
Gazan health officials say 48 people have died so far today.
Meanwhile, Israel is now allowing humanitarian aid
into Gaza.
Rachel Cummings is a humanitarian team leader
in Gaza for Save the Children.
It's a desperate situation, and everywhere we look, we will see children with empty bowls looking for food,
children with empty bottles looking for water.
The whole of Gaza is in need of humanitarian assistance.
Now, whatever Save the Children can do, we will do,
but we know also that is a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed for everybody here.
Israel says about 300 trucks of aid have entered Gaza in the past few days.
But the UN says so far only about a third of those deliveries have reached warehouses
for distribution.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres compares it to a teaspoon where a flood is needed.
In Ukraine, prisoners reunite with their loved ones after being released by Russia.
They're part of an ongoing prisoner exchange between Kiev and Moscow. The first stage of
the swaps saw the sides release 390 prisoners each. Today, Russia said 307 more prisoners
were exchanged. It happened just hours after
Russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine's capital.
Explosions lit up the sky over Kyiv during an overnight attack. Ukrainian officials say
at least 15 people were injured during the drone and missile strikes. They say it's one
of the largest combined attacks carried out by Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The G7 summit in Alberta is just over three weeks away and preparations are in the final
stages for a massive domestic security and logistics operation. The landscape has changed
significantly since the last time the Kenanaskis region hosted the G8 summit in 2002. John Curtin is director of the G7 research group at the University
of Toronto.
You've got many more deliberate cyber attacks now than you did in 2002, and they're more
complex and they can be both accidental or very much targeted. Security officials say they're taking steps to deal with new technological threats and drones.
The area around Kananaskis will be locked down during the summit.
At least three people are dead after unprecedented rain and flooding in India's Bengaluru, formerly
known as Bangalore.
Residents are wading through knee-high floodwaters, submerged streets and collapsed roads.
Local authorities say the city's canal was overwhelmed by constant downpour, with teams
now working to prevent further clogging.
The rain is expected to continue until Thursday.
Hurricane season is just over a week away and it may be a busy one for Atlantic Canada.
The U.S.-based National Hurricane Center predicted a 60 percent probability of an above-average
season. On average, the Atlantic hurricane season sees 14 named storms a year, half become
hurricanes and three reach category three or higher.
This year's outlook anticipates between 13 to 19 named storms and three to five major
hurricanes.
Bob Robichaud is a meteorologist with the Canadian Hurricane Center.
He says while the season may be busier this year, that doesn't mean more storms will
make landfall. If we look at the 2023 hurricane season,
we had two more storms than last year,
yet the damage from last year is about $100 billion more
last year with two fewer storms.
Although we can predict the level of activity,
we can't necessarily predict exactly where they're
going to go, if any will make landfall,
and what the impacts might be.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.
And that's your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Julianne Hazelwood.
