Starting point is 00:00:42 With parliament about to begin a new session, the liberals and conservatives held caucus meetings today. Details from Rafi Boujikaneen. This government failed to table a budget pretty soon. Conservative Gérard Deltel ready with criticism before MPs returned to the House of Commons, a theme for leader Pierre Poiliever as well. We're going to be demanding a spring budget. But the opposition cannot force the government to do that. Pogliev also won't be in the Commons until he wins a by-election as he lost his seat. This is the room that won our party a strong mandate. Prime Minister Mark Carney was keen to highlight liberal electoral success.
Starting point is 00:01:21 A 169-member caucus that is the conscience of this party. MPs will also choose a new House Speaker. Seven members have put their names forward. Rafi Boudjikani on CBC News, Ottawa. Today marks five years since George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer. Floyd was black, the cop white. The incident sparked a racial reckoning. The CBC's Sarah Levitt is in Minneapolis where Floyd is being remembered.
Starting point is 00:01:50 People here say they feel raw. Some have said that they do think there have been some changes. Others are upset they feel like nothing has changed. I spoke with one of Floyd's friends. Let's hear from Maestro King about his relationship and the importance of that relationship with George Floyd. Strong, positive, and I just know we used to chat for hours. He was, I don't got much family. So he was somebody to talk to. He was an elder, you know, somebody older than me
Starting point is 00:02:21 that had been around. And I just remember having long conversations with them. Meanwhile, here in Minneapolis, they're going to continue to commemorate the anniversary of the death tonight. There will be a gospel concert as well as a vigil, all to remember George Floyd. Sarah Levitt reporting from Minneapolis.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Canada Post says mediation talks are scheduled today with the Postal Workers Union. This is the third day of job action. Workers are in a legal strike position but chose to stay on the job, although are not working overtime, so there may be some disruptions to mail delivery. The Crown Corporation says it's waiting for the union to respond to its latest contract offer. In Toronto, In Toronto, thousands of people draped in Israeli and Canadian flags walk below an overpass for the 56 Walk with Israel rally organized by United Jewish Appeal.
Starting point is 00:03:14 There was a heightened police presence at this year's rally because of planned pro-Palestinian counter protests. UJA's Sarah Lefton. I think this year more than ever our community is feeling increasingly isolated because of the drastic increase in anti-Semitism. And I think that more than ever it's important for us to come together to stand united again with people inside of our Jewish community but also those outside of the Jewish community to show us that we're not alone. Toronto police say there have been 43 reported hate crimes against the city's Jewish community
Starting point is 00:03:47 so far this year. On Sunday, Israel's National Security Council raised its travel alert for Canada, warning of threats against Israelis and Jews. To Gaza now. Palestinians in Kanyunas hold a funeral for people killed in an Israeli airstrike. At least 23 people were killed in separate Israeli strikes in the north, south and central Gaza. Palestinian authorities say a local journalist and a senior rescue service official are among the dead. Ukraine and Russia have completed the exchange of 1,000 prisoners each.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes! exchange of 1,000 prisoners each. Ukrainian officials welcomed the prisoners many in tears as they speak with loved ones. This is the largest prisoner swap so far in the conflict, with Russia's war in Ukraine still waging on more than three years on.
