A new session of Parliament begins today with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative
Starting point is 00:00:46 leader Pierre Polyev eager to get back to work. This is one of the most rapid returns to Parliament in Canadian history, and it will be one of the most busy returns to Parliament in Canadian history. And while we narrowly missed forming government, we now have every duty to fight for change. And the first order of business this morning will be the election of a new Speaker of the House. Eight candidates are in the running, including former Speaker Greg Fergus. Meanwhile, King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down in Ottawa later today.
Starting point is 00:01:20 They're spending two days in the capital for their first visit to Canada since the King's coronation two years ago. After flying into the city, they'll be taken to Lansdowne Park and then to Rideau Hall to be met by Prime Minister Carney and Governor General Mary Simon. Tomorrow, King Charles will be delivering the speech from the throne. After bombarding Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles over the weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing harsh criticism today from an unlikely source. U.S. President Donald Trump. Starting point is 00:01:59 Putin following this weekend's uptick in violence in Ukraine. I don't know what the hell happened to Putin. I've known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he's sending rockets into cities and killing people and I don't like it at all. Trump told reporters he was now seriously considering hitting Russia with more sanctions and later on True Social he down, saying Putin had gone absolutely crazy and warned that any attempt to conquer all of Ukraine would lead to Russia's downfall. Last night, Russia attacked Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles for the third night in a row, just the day after Moscow launched its biggest aerial attack of the war so far, killing at least 12 people, including children.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Dominic Velaitis for CBC News, Riga, Latvia. More than 50 people were killed overnight in Gaza after the latest round of Israeli airstrikes. And among the buildings targeted was a former school being used as an emergency shelter. Tom Perry has the latest now from Jerusalem. Palestinian civil defense officials say rescuers pulled more than 30 bodies from the site of one Israeli attack. The Israeli military says it was targeting a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command center. The head of a newly formed group, Jake Wood, has resigned as director of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, citing concerns about the group's impartiality. Jan Eglund is secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council. He says Wood's group, backed by the US and Israeli governments, would militarize and politicize humanitarian assistance. And we cannot have aid in a war zone that is not in conformity with neutrality and partiality. Israel says the new group will prevent aid being stolen by Hamas. Tom Perry, CBC News, Jerusalem. The Ontario man who has pleaded guilty to stealing an iconic portrait of Winston Churchill
Starting point is 00:04:07 will be sentenced today. Geoffrey Wood admits to stealing the portrait by renowned photographer, Youssef Karsh. Police say it was stolen from the Chateau Laurier sometime over the Christmas holidays in 2021 and replaced with a fake, but the swap was only discovered months later. The portrait of Britain's former Prime Minister is now back in the hotel lobby. The Minnesota Frost can repeat as the professional women's hockey league champions with a win today against the visiting Ottawa Charge. The defending Walter Cup champs lead the best of five final two games to one
